To mark Mental Health Awareness Week, Year 4 explored the themes of “Let Your Light Shine” and “Feelings” in their English lessons. The children wrote thoughtful and expressive poems, reflecting on emotions, individuality and what makes each of them special.

They then selected their favourite poem to be included in our Year 4 poetry book, taking great pride in their work.

To celebrate, we visited Abbey Manor Care Home, where the children shared their poems and performed songs for the residents. It was a truly special experience, bringing joy to others while building the children’s confidence and sense of connection with the wider community.

This week in R.E., we explored the concept of agape, which means selfless, unconditional love for others. We discussed how agape is shown through actions, especially when we choose to help people without expecting anything in return. To deepen our understanding, we linked this idea to the parable of the Good Samaritan, where a man shows kindness and compassion to someone in need, even though others had chosen to walk past.

The children reflected on the message of the story and talked about what it means to be a good neighbour in everyday life. They shared thoughtful ideas about helping others, showing kindness, and not judging people based on differences.

As part of the lesson, the children worked creatively to write their own play scripts based on the parable. They thought carefully about characters, dialogue, and how to convey the message of agape through their stories. They then practised and performed their plays in groups, bringing the story to life through acting.

We had a wonderful time at Glastonbury Abbey, with the sun shining and a fantastic atmosphere throughout the day. The children thoroughly enjoyed exploring the ruins on a guided tour, bringing history to life in an exciting way. They especially loved dressing up as Tudors and taking part in traditional Tudor board games, which added a fun, interactive element to the experience.

In the Abbot’s kitchen, the children immersed themselves in hands-on activities, collecting herbs to create their own potions and medicines, as well as learning how these ingredients were used in Tudor cooking. They also tried their hand at churning butter, making bread, and grinding grain to produce flour. To finish, they made delicious Tudor-style sweets, rounding off a truly memorable and educational day.

We have had a lovely first week back, and it has been wonderful to hear all about the children’s Easter breaks—there were lots of smiles and stories to share! The class have returned with a positive attitude and have settled quickly back into our routines, ready for a busy and exciting term ahead.

In R.E, we have begun our new topic on agape, where the children are learning about different types of unconditional love. We have been exploring what it means to show kindness, compassion and selflessness towards others, and discussing how these values can be demonstrated in everyday life. The children have already contributed some thoughtful reflections, and we brought our ideas together to create a class poster.
