Wow, we have been busy in Year 1 for the last week of Spring 1!

We learnt the story behind Chinese New Year as we get ready to welcome the Year of the Horse. The children loved finding out their own zodiac animals and discovering the personality traits linked to them.

For Mental Health Week, we explored the theme of belonging, talking about how we can make everyone feel welcome and included. We also discussed the importance of kindness and spent time learning about our different emotions and how to understand them.

We were also lucky to be inspired by an incredible assembly from Year 3 all about hope, which gave us lots to think about.

On Safer Internet Day, we discussed the importance of using AI safely and worked together to create five important rules to help us use technology responsibly.

In Science, we wrote the conclusion for our cress growing experiment. We discovered that the cress grew in all of the materials - cotton wool, tissue, soil, rocks and sand! We then discussed which material would be best for healthy growth and why.

Our week also included a fantastic Victorian workshop. The children had the opportunity to play with toys from the past, dress up in Victorian clothing and even make their own thaumatrope after learning about a zoetrope. It was a wonderful hands-on history experience.

To end the week on a lovely note, we made beautiful Valentine’s hearts for our loved ones.

It was a week full of culture, reflection, history, science and creativity!

We hope everyone enjoys their well deserved week off! ðŸ’›

What a creative and busy week we’ve had in Year 1!

We enjoyed reading Oi Frog! and had lots of fun completing our own rhyming couplets to match the pictures. The children loved playing with words and thinking of funny rhymes.

Our discussions in RE focused on God’s world and what we can do to look after it. We shared thoughtful ideas about caring for nature, being kind and protecting the environment.

Maths learning introduced us to arrays, and we explored how they help us understand equal groups. The children created their own arrays and proudly displayed them in their books.

In Art, we tried weaving a fish. It was a tricky skill for some of us, but the children showed fantastic perseverance and were very proud of their finished pieces.

To top it all off, we spent a whole day creating our wonderful Rapunzel moving books. The children worked incredibly hard and were so excited to share their finished books with the Reception children!

Year 1 have had another exciting week full of stories, hands-on learning and curiosity!

We read the story of Rapunzel and even wrote wanted posters for the witch, thinking carefully about her appearance and actions in the story.

In Maths, we recapped 3D shapes, exploring their faces, edges and vertices, and talking about the properties that make each shape unique.

We also got to plant cress seeds in different materials - tissue, cotton wool, sand, rocks and soil - and made predictions about which ones we think will grow best. We can’t wait to watch and record the results over the coming weeks!

A brilliant week of imagination, exploration and growing minds!

Year 1 have had a fantastic week full of stories, learning and hands-on activities!

We enjoyed reading Little Red Riding Hood, describing the wolf in detail and retelling the story using our own words. The children loved acting out the parts and imagining the adventure through the forest.

The children had a super engaging tag rugby workshop led by Premier Education. They practised running, passing and teamwork skills in fun, active games. Everyone took part with great energy, improving their coordination and learning how to work together as a team.

In Maths, we explored the concepts of heavier and lighter. We had a practical challenge guessing how many blocks each object weighed and then testing our predictions—everyone loved experimenting and comparing the results!

In Science, we learnt the difference between deciduous and evergreen trees, identifying examples and talking about how they change through the seasons.

We also practised plaiting in preparation for our upcoming Rapunzel books, ready to add hair to our main character.

Finally, we completed another phonics test and were really impressed with the children’s scores—well done! Keep on reading at home to keep up the fantastic progress.

A brilliant week of learning, movement, creativity and fun!
