At Preston Primary School we view sport not as an extracurricular activity but as a fundamental part of the educational experience. Our commitment to sport is evident in the regular competitions and events we attend, both in school and within the community, which encourage both healthy competition and a sense of community.
We are also members of the Yeovil School Games Alliance (YSGA) which provides our pupils with a range of inter school sporting opportunities.
Cricket Workshops
At the end of the Spring Term each year group attended a cricket workshop led by Shaun from the Somerset Cricket Foundation. The children learnt key skills in batting, bowling and fielding. The sessions were engaging and tailored to each year groups ability, making the learning fun.
Dodgeball
Select children from Years 5 and 6 showcased teamwork and agility at an exciting dodgeball tournament. Competing with enthusiasm, they made us extremely proud during the fun, fast paced matches!
Cross Country at Aldon Hill
Another huge congratulations to all of our runners at their last cross country event of the academic year. We look forward to seeing you all at the cross county events next year!
Cross Country at Buckler's Mead
396 children from 30 different schools ran in the six different races at Buckler's Mead. Children in KS2 tested their stamina, showed strength, determination and sportsmanship to complete the races and cheer on their teammates.
Basketball
A huge well done to our Year 6 boys took part in a Basketball tournament and came third! With incredible teamwork, determination and skill, they showed true sportsmanship throughout the tournament.
Handball
We attended our first Handball tournament where the children learnt about the similarities with football. The Year 6 children did well to control and pass the ball using their hands. The tournament was exciting and fast-paced and we can't wait to see if we can attend more.
Boys Football
We have attended countless KS2 boys football matches with resounding success. The players display fantastic skill, strategy and teamwork demonstrating great talent both offensively and defensively. The events ran smoothly, thanks to YSGA, and we look forward to future opportunities to compete.
Girls Football
We have taken part in numerous girls’ football tournaments, where several schools battle it out on the pitch in a series of fast-paced and competitive matches, demonstrating immense determination and superb teamwork. These competitions have been a huge success and further promoted the celebration of the growth of girls’ football and have been integral to helping inspire future players.
Netball
We have entered a team in a number of Netball tournaments hosted by YSGA, each of which were fantastic events. Teams from various Primary schools in the surrounding area coming together to showcase their talent and sportsmanship.
Cross Country
When attending Cross Country competitions our pupils give their all, regularly pushing themselves to complete each course showing outstanding determination and immense effort. Everyone who attended demonstrated great resilience and provided wonderful support for each other along the way. Every pupil embraced the challenge, focusing on doing their very best rather than the outcome.
KS1 Football Opportunity
Mr Howchin recently visited our school to teach Reception and Year 1 pupils the basics of football in a fun and engaging way. Mr Howchin led a series of interactive sessions, focusing on fundamental skills such as dribbling and passing. The pupils were excited to learn new techniques and improve their confidence.
Diwali Dance
During Interfaith Week, Keri Hill came in to teach each year group to perform a Jewish Celebration Dance. The children put their dancing shoes on, carefully listened to the instructions and tested their memory of the new dance steps, all successfully learning to complete this celebratory the dance.
Sponsored Run
We held a sponsored run at our school which was a great success, with students of all ages taking part in a fun and energetic event to raise funds for a good cause, ‘A School in a Bag’. The event fostered a sense of community with students encouraging one another throughout the duration of the run.
