We have continued our learning with more Rainbow Fish adventures this week, reading Rainbow Fish to the Rescue. The children explored how the little striped fish felt when he was left out and how his emotions changed when his friends invited him to play. We then consolidated our understanding with a comprehension task, showing great focus and thoughtful answers.

Maths has been all about money and number skills. We began with simple addition and subtraction number sentences and worked our way up to more challenging multiplication and division word problems, using our knowledge of the 2s, 5s and 10s times tables. The children have shown fantastic resilience as the challenge increased.

We have also been busy across other subjects. In Science, we labelled both a bird and a mammal, discussing the key features of each animal group. In Geography, we compared Yeovil and Weymouth, thinking about how they are similar and different before finishing the week by designing and writing our own postcards.

After five very busy weeks, we are definitely ready for a well-earned half-term break! 🌟

We started this week with lots of creativity as we made our very own windmills! After previously designing them and thinking carefully about the resources we would need, the children finally had the chance to bring their ideas to life. It was a fun-filled day that required lots of perseverance, teamwork and determination.

English lessons were also full of imagination this week as our focus story was The Rainbow Fish Discovers the Deep Sea. We discussed why the little blue fish might not want Rainbow Fish to swim into the canyon and completed a comprehension activity to help deepen our understanding of the story.

In Maths, we explored capacity and volume, estimating and comparing the volume and capacity of different boxes, tubs and containers. The children enjoyed making predictions and testing their ideas.

With the weather becoming brighter and warmer, we also spent time discussing sun safety and how we can protect ourselves when spending time outside in the sunshine.

This week our English focus was The Snail and the Whale. We spent time thinking carefully about the different feelings the snail experienced throughout the story before having a go at writing the story ourselves. The children produced some fantastic writing with lots of great detail and description.

In Maths, we consolidated our number bonds to 20 and 30 and applied this knowledge to both word problems and tricky missing number calculations involving numbers such as 11 and 21. The children worked really hard and showed growing confidence.

Art was full of creativity this week as we experimented with potato printing ready for our DT project. We also explored primary and secondary colours, mixing and creating some wonderful patterns and designs.

To end the week, we talked about the amazing Sir David Attenborough turning 100 and watched part of Secret Garden to learn more about his work and passion for the natural world. We also discussed the importance of VE Day, learning about the soldiers and how people celebrated the end of the war.

Another wonderful week of creativity, reflection and fantastic learning in Year 1! 🌎🎨📚

Wow! What a brilliant second week of the Summer term we’ve had in Year 1!

The highlight of our week was our exciting trip to Longleat! In English, we began by learning fun facts about zebras and rhinos, which got us ready for our visit. On Thursday, we set off to see all the wonderful animals, and with the sun shining brightly, many of them were out enjoying the warm weather. It was a fantastic experience that we will remember for a long time!

Maths has been all about sharing, as we practised grouping into 2s, 5s and 10s. The children worked really hard to understand how to share equally.

Our afternoons have been just as busy! We labelled an amphibian and discussed its key features, and we also continued learning about the seaside, focusing on human and physical features.

A truly amazing week full of sunshine, learning and unforgettable experiences! ☀️🦓

We started the Summer term with a shorter four-day week, but we were very busy!

Our learning in English was based around the story of The Rainbow Fish. The children used creative adjectives to describe him and then had a go at retelling the story in their own words.

Maths was all about grouping. We practised making and colouring groups of 2, 5 and 10, before finishing the week by exploring doubling.

In Science, we labelled and described fish, thinking about their different features and what helps them live underwater.

We also began learning about the seaside, identifying its key features and getting into a lovely summery mood!

In RE, we explored the importance of caring for others across different religions, sharing thoughtful ideas about kindness and looking after people.

A fantastic and busy start to the Summer term! ☀️🐠
