  • Week 12 Overview

    The last full week of the year has been another busy and memorable one for Pear Class!

    We started the week by watching the fantastic Year 6 production of Annie. The singing, acting and confidence on stage were incredible, and we were thoroughly entertained. A huge well done to all of the Year 6 children and staff for putting on such a wonderful show!

    In RE, we reflected on everything we have learnt about belonging to a church, mosque and synagogue. This led to some thoughtful discussions about whether we need to be in a special place to pray or think about important things, with the children sharing some wonderful ideas and opinions.

    As the end of Year 1 draws closer, we also spent time talking about moving on to Year 2. We discussed how it is completely normal to feel a little nervous about change, but also how exciting new adventures can be. The children were brilliant at sharing their feelings and encouraging one another, and we hope they now feel much more confident about the year ahead.

    To finish the week, we enjoyed a fantastic DT Day, where the children designed and built their very own Victorian bathing machines complete with working wheels. They showed amazing creativity, problem-solving skills and perseverance, and we were so impressed with their finished models.

    Another wonderful week of learning, reflecting and preparing for the exciting journey into Year 2!

  • Week 11 Overview

    We’ve had another fantastic week in Year 1, making the most of the sunshine with lots of outdoor learning!

    Our English focus was the story Charlie and Tyler at the Seaside. The children enjoyed describing both of the mice, using exciting adjectives to bring the characters to life. We also explored the countryside setting before finishing the week by creating our own 'Wanted' posters for the cheeky seabird who flew away with Tyler!

    The beautiful weather meant we could take our Maths learning outside. We played bowling and bean bag throwing games before adding together our team scores. We also took part in a jumping challenge, measuring how far we could jump, comparing the shortest and longest distances, finding the difference between them and recording our results like real mathematicians.

    As part of our PSHE learning, we discussed how to keep ourselves safe by understanding that our bodies belong to us. We talked about the importance of keeping our private parts private, recognising trusted adults and knowing what to do if we ever feel worried or unsafe.

    To end the week, we continued our exciting Art project by creating 3D sculptures. Using curved paper, the children carefully constructed beautiful 3D rainbows, showing fantastic creativity and perseverance.

  • Week 10 Overview

    We were very grateful that this week was still sunny but much cooler than last week's heatwave!

    The highlight of the week was finally having our Sports Day. The children had a fantastic time taking part in all of their races and showed great determination, teamwork and sportsmanship. A huge thank you to everyone who came along to cheer us on and support us, it made the day even more special!

    Our English lessons were based on the story Lucy and Tom at the Seaside. We began the week by retelling the story and loved describing all the exciting things the characters got up to at the beach. By the end of the week, the children were confidently answering comprehension questions in full sentences and showing a great understanding of the text.

    In Maths, we focused on sequencing events in chronological order, using language such as before, after, first, next, yesterday, today, tomorrow, morning, afternoon and evening. The children enjoyed discussing and ordering different events throughout the day.

    History took us back to the seaside of the past as we discovered how the price of ice creams has changed over time. We were especially fascinated by the Victorian penny-lick! The children could hardly believe that the glass dishes were used over and over again without being washed, and they were very relieved that we don't have to share our ice creams in the same way today!

    To finish the week, the children enjoyed their transition afternoon with Mrs Rich. They came back full of smiles and excitement for Year 2. There are definitely a few butterflies too, but we know they are more than ready for their next adventure, even though we don't want to see them go!

  • Week 9 Overview

    Wow, what a hot week we have had ! The UK heatwave certainly made for an unusual week, and we missed those children who stayed at home Wednesday and Thursday to keep safe in the high temperatures.

    The week began by exploring day length and learning about the longest day of the year, which was on Saturday 21st June. We discovered that many people celebrate by visiting the Summer Solstice at Glastonbury Tor and Stonehenge, and we enjoyed finding out about these special traditions.

    In Maths, we focused on finding the difference between two numbers, exploring different methods to help us solve the calculations. Before the heatwave really hit, we even managed to squeeze in a little bit of poetry, with the children showing lots of creativity in their writing.

    For those who were in school during the hottest days, we found plenty of ways to stay cool! We made our own fans and even enjoyed a little spa experience, filling our trays with water and dipping our feet in to cool down.

    By Friday, everyone was back together and ready for more learning. We stepped back in time to learn about Victorian bathing machines and then got creative by learning how to quill, carefully rolling paper to decorate beautiful butterflies.

    Despite the soaring temperatures, it has been another fantastic week full of learning, creativity and keeping cool! ☀️🦋💦🌡️

  • Week 8 Overview

    This week has been another busy and exciting one in Year 1!

    Our History learning has taken us back in time as we explored how the beach has changed since the 1900s. We looked at entertainment on the beach, activities on the piers and what life by the seaside was like in the past compared to today.

    RE lessons focused on learning about mosques as sacred places for Muslims. The children discovered different ways that Muslims show they belong to a mosque, including reading the Qur'an, praying together and being part of their community.

    There has also been lots of excitement building as we have spent time practising for Sports Day. The children have been very active and are looking forward to showing off their skills on the big day. We just hope it doesn't get too hot!

    One of the highlights of the week was our fantastic Seaside Day. The children created their own wonderful 3D seaside models, showing lots of creativity and attention to detail. We were also lucky enough to have an RNLI assembly, where we learnt all about staying safe around water and even got the chance to dress up in lifeguard outfits.

    To finish the week, we were invited to watch the KS2 Talent Show. We were amazed by all the brilliant performances and enjoyed cheering on the talented children on stage. Well done to everyone who took part!

  • Week 7 Overview

    What a busy week we have had in Pear Class! The children have worked incredibly hard during their phonics screening checks, and we are so proud of every single one of them for the effort and determination they have shown.

    Despite our busy week, there has still been lots of fantastic learning taking place. Our English focus has been poetry and rhyme. We started the week by writing our own acrostic poems for World Ocean Day, and we were lucky enough to have a lovely assembly from the Eco Team, who taught us all about the importance of looking after our oceans and marine life.

    Later in the week, we explored different digraphs that make the same sound and used these words to create our very own rhyming couplets. The children loved playing with language and coming up with some brilliant rhymes.

    Maths brought a challenge of its own as we worked to complete our 100 number squares. The children had to carefully fill in all the numbers from 1 to 100, using their knowledge of number patterns to help them.

    It has been a week full of hard work, creativity and perseverance, and we couldn't be prouder of how the children have approached every challenge! 🌊📚🔢✨

  • Week 6 Overview

    We started Summer 2, the final half-term of Year 1, with lots of excitement and even found out who our teachers will be in Year 2!

    Our English learning was based on the story Bright Stanley. The children enjoyed retelling the story and used some fantastic adjectives to make their writing more detailed and interesting.

    Fractions were the focus in Maths this week. The children learnt how to find a half and a quarter of a number, before applying this knowledge to finding halves and quarters of shapes too.

    History took us back in time as we thought about our own past experiences. Everyone enjoyed recalling a special holiday or day out and sharing their memories with Miss Hayball and Mrs Rendell, making sure to include lots of details about what happened.

    To finish the week, we were treated to a wonderful performance by Year 5. Their presentation on the Victorians was fantastic and we especially enjoyed all of the singing!

    A brilliant start to our final half-term in Year 1, and we can't wait to see what the next few weeks have in store! 🌟📚🎭🎶
