This week, the children in Year 5 and 6 were treated to an unforgettable workshop led by poet Chris Redman. He works alongside renowned children’s author and poet Michael Rosen as part of Hot Poets.
From the moment the session began, the energy in the room was electric. Chris captivated the children with his engaging and innovative approach. He used humour, rhythm, and storytelling to bring important environmental issues to life.
Through clever wordplay, catchy songs, energetic raps, and powerful poems, the children explored big topics including the environment, biodiversity, and climate change. Complex ideas were made accessible and exciting. This helped the children deepen their understanding while having enormous amounts of fun.
Chris has a remarkable talent for capturing young imaginations. He played with sounds, invented unforgettable ukulele-backed verses, and built rhythms together as a group. Every child was fully involved and eager to contribute.
The highlight of the workshop was creating our very own class poem. Guided carefully by Chris, the children’s ideas were woven together into a powerful piece of writing. Before long, the poem had transformed into a lively, rhythmic rap. Everyone was clapping, performing, and smiling from ear to ear.
It was a wonderful celebration of creativity, teamwork, and confidence. The classroom buzzed with excitement long after the session ended.
We are certain that many of us went home with the rap looping around in our heads all weekend.
A huge thank you to Chris for such an inspiring and thought-provoking workshop. The important messages about caring for our planet will stay with the children for a long time to come.
