'Sparking Change' Workshop

A valuable lesson in 'tech' waste!

Mulberry Class recently took part in a thought-provoking workshop delivered by Carymoor Environmental Centre as part of their Schools Against Waste programme.

The session, titled ‘Sparking Change’, focused on the growing issue of electrical waste. The children were surprised to learn just how many items such as mobile phones, tablets and laptops are thrown away each year. Through a range of discussions and activities, they explored what happens to these discarded devices and the impact this has on the environment.

One of the most powerful learning points was discovering that mobile phones contain valuable elements and rare materials that are running out across the world. The class considered the environmental cost of mining these materials and the consequences of replacing technology too frequently.

The workshop encouraged our class to think carefully about their own use of technology and what they can do to make a difference — from repairing and reusing devices to recycling them responsibly. It was an impactful day that challenged everyone to reflect on their choices.

Year 6 left the session determined to think twice before asking for new technology when the devices they already have are still perfectly sufficient.
