Art

At Preston C of E Primary, we believe that Art is essential in fostering pupils’ spiritual development; it allows them to explore and express their spirituality through creativity and reflection, helping them appreciate beauty and connect with something greater than themselves. This engagement nurtures a sense of awe and wonder, enriching their overall educational experience.

Art, Craft & Design is concerned with the way we understand and interpret the world through our senses and emotions.  Art and Design allows us to investigate what we see, to make responses, to interpret, to discriminate and reach decisions.  Art and Design has its own language based upon the visual elements.

Aims

Through Art, Craft and Design activities within this school we aim to:

a)  Develop skills in using materials and processes which will allow children to express their ideas, feelings, and emotions in line with our School’s Christian ethos.

b)  Develop an understanding and appreciation of a diverse range of Artists' work, both past and present.

c)  Encourage children to think and talk about their own work and the work of others, using respectful and constructive vocabulary.

d)  Encourage and merit personal ideas, values, and ways of working helping each child embrace their individuality and valuable input to our world.

e) Explore the qualities of pattern, colour, line, texture, shape, and form through work in a variety of media, building resilience through experimentation.

Objectives

a) To explore and use two and three-dimensional media, gathering resources and materials, using them to stimulate and develop ideas.

b) To record responses, including observations of the natural and man-made environment.

d) To apply knowledge of the work of artists, crafts people, and designers to their own work from a broad range of sources, being able to respond to and evaluate Art, Craft and Design, including their own and others work.

e) To review and modify their work as it progresses with the ability to be critical and reflective of their own practice.

Principles of Teaching and Learning

The study of Art, Craft and Design will engage children in a variety of different activities.  Planning will include a wide variety of stimuli to suit all genders, faiths and differing abilities.

Activities using drawing, painting, collage, 3D media and textiles will be covered in both Key Stages.  The study of the work of a diverse range of artists, crafts people, and designers, both past and present will also be part of the Art and Design activities.

Children will be engaged in a variety of activities.  They will have the opportunity to work individually, in pairs, groups or as a whole class.  They will be taught the creative, imaginative and practical skills needed to:

a) Express their ideas and feelings in line with our Christian values

b) Record observations and make critical reflections

c) Design and make images and artefacts with knowledge informed by research of other practitioners.

Art at Preston Primary is a priority as we believe that much of the children's learning is initiated, developed, and re-enforced by means of the visual and the tactile.  Children's ability to discriminate visually between shapes and to draw them accurately is closely aligned to the emergence of writing and Art, Craft and Design contributes to this knowledge.  We believe that a curriculum which seeks to educate the whole child must include the visual arts.
