  • Week 4 - 6

The second half of this half-term has been filled with fun activities and discoveries.

In English, we looked at the features of a balanced argument. We discussed why it was important to write about both viewpoints and how to conclude the argument. We also wrote a detailed set of instructions for our science experiment. Full of adjectives and adverbs, the instructions were easy to follow and were even used when we completed the experiment.

In Maths, we converted mass, used scales to read weight and converted millilitres and litres. We also looked at data and different ways that it can be displayed. The data came to life when we made a pictogram of our favourite ice cream flavours, a tally chart for our class pets and a bar chart of how we get to school. The discussions that followed afterwards made detailed connections and comparisons.

In Art, we have been using our sketching pencils and shading grips to create detailed observational drawings of a flower with its leaves. We then let our imaginations run wild, and we draw what we imagined to grow from our tiny seed. We turned these drawings into digital pieces of artwork.

We have been learning all about plants in Science. To conclude our topic, we set up an experiment to show how water travels through the stem of a plant to its leaves and petals. The children did a great job at setting up the equipment and observing the flowers throughout the week. We then concluded our results as a class.

In History, we have enjoyed travelling back in time to discover more about the Romans. We learnt about Hadrian's Wall and how it protected the Roman land; Boudicca and her battle with the Romans to get her land back, and the Roman gods and how they worshipped them. We even had time to make our own Roman helmets!

In RE, we have discovered more about Jewish beliefs and the important festivals, holy books and places of worship. We will go into more detail about this next half-term. We have looked at the origins of Judaism, the ten plagues and the ten commandments sent by God to Moses.

In DT, we have been designing out safety product for children to use when walking home in the dark. We programmed Micro:bits to flash and show messages. The children then designed their product to be eye-catching and accessible for all children to attach to their bags. Finally, we designed sales tags for their products. These had to be bright, fun and include a sales slogan.

Our topic in Computing this half-term has been Scratch. The children have learnt to add backgrounds, change their sprites, move their sprites and get them to talk! We have had a great time discovering new functions.
