Autumn

RE, History and Art

This week, Mulberry Class have settled confidently into the routines and expectations of Year 6. They’ve tackled their assessments with maturity and focus, and we’ve been really impressed by how quickly they’ve adapted—there’s a lot to remember in Year 6, and they’re taking it all in their stride. In RE, the children have been learning about Agape—selfless, unconditional love—and have shared some thoughtful reflections during class discussions. We’ve also launched our new history topic on the Maya civilisation, with pupils already asking curious and insightful questions about this fascinating ancient culture. In art, we’ve begun exploring photography as a medium, and it’s been wonderful to see their creative ideas starting to develop.

WELCOME TO MULBERRY CLASS

What a fantastic start to Year 6 in Mulberry Class! The children arrived with big smiles, focused minds, and a genuine enthusiasm for the year ahead. From the very first day, they have shown signs of being a truly exceptional Year 6 class—full of energy, kindness, and a love of learning. We have a wonderful group of children who are ready to rise to the challenge and make the most of their final year at Preston CofE Primary School. As their teachers, we are excited to watch them grow, thrive, and shine throughout what promises to be a very exciting and memorable year!

Weekly digest

As part of science, we have been learning about the digestive system. There were lots of people who felt very brave and volunteered to help recreate the process.

3-D or net 3-D

As part of our maths this week, we have been learning about and making nets of 3-D shapes. We started easy with basic cuboids and then moved on to more difficult prisms and pyramids.

Sponsored School in a Bag Run

Year 6 very valiantly braved the wet weather this Friday to take part in our sponsored run to raise money for School in a Bag. It was a win-win situation: the children got to burn off some (snow-fueled) energy and we raised thousands of pounds for a well-deserving charity!

A big thank you and well done to everyone who was involved.

Dissection and dancing and duty - oh my!

As part of a very busy Week 10, the children took part in a traditional Jewish dance in honour of interfaith week; played their part in paying respect to those remembered and honoured as part of Remembrance day celebrations; and participated in the dissection of a fresh pig's heart as the final lesson of our blood and circulation science topic.

Am I the drama?

This week, the children brought their RE learning to a climax as they worked together in groups to turn the Parable of the Unmerciful Servant into a dramatic sketch. The story focused on themes of forgiveness, love and justice, and the importance and relevance of these were discussed beforehand.

Take a look at some of the progress below!

Maya Chocolate Making

To celebrate the end of our Maya history topic, the children helped to make and then sampled their very own Mayan hot chocolate. The reviews were mixed but, overall, the children really enjoyed it.

Hello Yellow!

As part of ongoing support and awareness for mental health and well-being, we recently celebrated Hello Yellow day. As well as all wearing yellow clothes and accessories, the children partook in activities focusing on good mental health practices and positive self-esteem.

Magistrate Visit

Excitingly, Year 6 were visited by an experienced, serving magistrate in preparation for our upcoming Mock Trial. Mary kindly told the children all about her job, her experiences sentencing and also gave the children free reign to ask any questions they had. I can't wait to see some of the children put their new knowledge to the test soon!

Owl Visit

Recently, we were lucky enough to having an exciting opportunity to get up close and personal with an amazing range of captive owls. The children really enjoyed getting to ask questions, learning about 4 different types of owls and even having the chance to touch them (if they felt brave enough)!

Welcome Back!

A huge welcome back to school and a new welcome to Year 6 is in order.

I have been incredibly impressed already with Mulberry Class' attitude to learning and enthusiasm for the year ahead, and I can't wait to see how that progresses as the year goes on.

I think a fantastic year is in store for us!
