Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra Workshop
Following from their visit before Christmas, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra came to work with us this afternoon. Neil, Andrew, Rowan and Harry taught us a little bit about their instruments and then helped us to learn a new song. We had a fun afternoon.
Welcome to Summer Term!
Welcome back to Summer term in Cedar Class. We have a busy term ahead of us and so it was great to have everyone back in class refreshed and ready to learn. We hope you had a lovely break. Violet was busy putting her science learning to good use over the holiday by repotting her sunflowers and helping her grandma with some seeds! Keep looking after your sunflowers. We can’t wait to see who can grow the tallest flower!
Happy Easter!
SCARF Workshop
Harold the giraffe came with Jane to talk to us about feelings as part of our PSHCE work. We talked about SCARF meaning safety, caring, achievement, resilience and friendship. We talked about keeping healthy and how we can deal with a range of feelings. Plus, we got to stroke Harold!
Cricket Session
We were very excited to work with Sean from the Somerset Cricket Foundation today. He taught us how to throw the ball at the stumps, how to bat and how to catch the cricket ball. We had a great afternoon!
Growing Seeds
We have been using what we have learnt about germination and plants to sow some sunflower seeds. We hope that, in the correct conditions, we will all grow some tall sunflowers. We are also enjoying observing how our broad beans are different conditions.
Making Moving Monsters
In our Design and Technology lessons we have been looking at levers, linkages and pivots. We have made moving monster toys using what we have learnt. We then had to evaluate them to say what had gone well and what we would improve next time.
World Book Day 2025
What a lot of amazing costumes we have seen today! We have had a fabulous day celebrating books and reading. It is also careers week and Amy, from Branston Potatoes, came to talk to us about her job and read Supertato to us!
Measuring Length
We are learning how to measure length in centimetres and metres. We found out that Usain Bolt can run 100m in under 10 seconds. We measured how far we could run in 10seconds, using trundle wheels.
Safer Internet Day
As part of our work during Safer Internet Day, we took part in a live online lesson that taught us about we can spot scams online. If something looks too good to be true, it probably is! We also thought about our own use of the internet and weighed up the pros and cons of different apps and websites.
Great Fire Of London Workshop
Sam from the museum service came to work with us on our history topic of The Great Fire of London. We got to dress up in period clothes, handle artefacts and try out writing with a quill and ink, like Samuel Pepys did in his diary. We all had a great time.
Creating Texture With Paint
In our art lessons, we have been thinking about texture. We collected objects during a texture hunt. We brought the objects into the studio to use as a stimulus. We tried to mix colours and use different painting techniques to create textures.
Child Led Worship
Today it was our turn to lead collective worship. We talked about World Religion Day and thought about the different religions in the world. We discovered that all religions have differences, but they all teach us to be kind, caring and peaceful.
Non-Fiction Texts
We are learning about non-fiction texts and thinking about their features and how they are organised. We have looked at index pages and discovered they are organised in alphabetical order. We have tried hard to put a selection of animals in alphabetical order, including thinking about what happens when words begin with the same letter.
Happy New Year!
It has been lovely to have the children back for the beginning of 2025! We have been thinking about resolutions and how we might go about achieving them. Have a look at these resolutions written by Salehm, Connor, Elena and Teagan.
Panto Trip
What a fun afternoon we have had! We enjoyed cheering the goodies, booing the baddies and dancing in the aisles to Jack and the Beanstalk. Thank you to the PTA for funding this amazing experience and providing sweets for the interval.
Christmas Riddles
We have used the different sentence types to write riddles with a Christmas theme. Can you solve the riddles?
Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra
Year 2 were very lucky to have some special visitors from BSO this morning. They introduced us to instruments that we had never seen before, and showed us how to play them. We then worked in teams to create a tune with words to match on the theme of ‘new horizons’. We performed our songs to each other and enjoyed learning all about classical music.
Designing Ferris Wheels
In our design and technology lessons, we have been learning about wheels and axles. We were given a design brief to build a Ferris wheel with a sturdy base, a working wheel and pods to fit at least eight people. We worked in pairs to build our designs.
No Peeking Mums and Dads!!! :Recycled Tea Light Holders
In science we have been learning about materials and their properties. We have been thinking about our use of plastic and the impact it has on the environment. As such, we have been thinking about how we can reduce, reuse and recycle objects. We have made tealight holders out of old jam jars to make a recycled Christmas gift for a loved one.
The First Christmas
We are busy putting the finishing touches to our nativity play and can’t wait to perform to our mummies and daddies next week. Hope to see you all there!
Division
We have been learning about how to carry out divisions. We have used sharing, arrays and grouping. We realised that division and multiplication are linked, and we can use our times tables to help calculate divisions.
Bovington Tank Museum
As part of our History work on Remembrance, we visited Bovington Tank Museum. It was incredible to see such a variety of tanks close up and realise how huge they are. We saw the cramped conditions that the soldiers had to endure inside and we even got to experience what life in the trenches was like. The children enjoyed collecting the stamps around the exhibitions and trying on some of the uniforms from different time periods. A great day was had by all!
Printmaking
Today we used our maps to create prints. We chose a section of our map to recreate and drew it onto a polystyrene tile. We then rolled ink onto the design and created our prints.
Rhyming Poetry
We have been reading some poems. We thought about the rhythm of the language and the rhyming patterns. We tried to include the same patterns in our own writing.
How Can We Keep Mr Grinling’s Lunch Dry?
Mrs Grinling always sends Mr Grinling’s lunch to him in the lighthouse on a wire that goes from the little white cottage perched on the cliff. We were worried what would happen to the lunch if it rained and so we designed a science investigation to test which material would be best to keep the lunch dry. We used six different materials, made predictions, tested them fairly and then made simple conclusions.
Recognising Coins and Making Amounts of Money
In our maths lesson today, we have been looking at coins and using them to create different amounts of money. We discovered that we can often make an amount using different combinations of coins.
Hello Yellow Day 2024
Today we celebrated World Mental Health Day by coming to school dressed in yellow.
We discussed what mental health is and how we've all felt happy, sad, angry, worried, calm and loved at different times in our lives.
Next, we read a story called "The Huge Bag of Worries" and then wrote about our own worries on a worry monster!
Spirituality
In Year 2 we have been thinking about what spirituality means to us and we came up with five definitions that we believe define it.
Felt Making
Last week, we designed maps to show our routes to school. We included the things that we see along the way, but added things from our imaginations, too. Today we each chose a section of our maps to put towards a piece of artwork. We used wool roving to make felt, starting with a a white background and then building up the colours to represent our designs.
Harvest Online Lesson
Today we joined the NFU for a live online lesson all about harvest and where our food comes from. We thought about different parts of the plants that can be eaten and how the farmers gather them from the fields. We even learnt some dance moves to remember how the combine harvester works!
Harvest Festival
Today was our harvest festival. Rev. Keen came to lead our worship. Well done to Oliver and Dinaka who read beautifully.
Owl Visit
Thank you to the PTA for organising a visit from Owl Obsession. We got to meet a variety of owls, and even got to feel their feathers. Anna told us lots of interesting facts about owls, their habitats and diets.
Place Value Using Straws
We have been thinking about the value of each digit in a 2-digit number. We represented these numbers using straws. There were bundles of 10 straws and individual straws. We then thought about 1/10 more/less than our numbers.
Welcome to Cedar Class
It was lovely to welcome everyone to Cedar Class today. Everyone came in looking smart and full of smiles. We talked about all of the exciting things that we got up to over the summer break. We also thought about some crazy, fantastic things that we had NOT done. We wrote sentences, remembering to use capital letters, finger spaces and full stops and then we collated our ideas to create a class poem.
