Autumn Term

Week 13

A busy assessment week in Sycamore. Lots of computing to create our own times table and pong-style games on scratch in the afternoons and even just enough time to create some Christingles and learn about their significance as we prepare for Christmas. We also had a very special visitor....

Week 12

Cool Aeronautics was the highlight of this week. A big thanks to Leonardos for an amazing day of engineering. The children persevered to create a bridge and an air-powered car using common household materials. Some interesting designs (and results) but a very productive day that promoted creative thinking and teamwork skills.

A valiant effort (it went further on the next attempt)

Week 11

An action-packed week with lots of activities in Sycamore Class. Some highlights include getting hands-on with our digestion revision in science and making nets in maths.

Week 10 (Mock Trial)

Some children were fortunate enough to take part in a competition against other local schools in a mock trial. As the prosecuting team, it was our job to prove the case behind a reasonable doubt, and I am delighted to report that we not only won the case but came second overall. A fantastic achievement! We also helped raise money for Children in Need through a cake sale and non-school uniform before taking part in a first-aid workshop provided by the British Red Cross.

Week 9 (Remembrance Day and Poppy Making)

To commemorate Remembrance Day 2022, Sycamore Class honoured fallen WWI soldiers from Yeovil and the surrounding areas by writing their names and displaying the entrance to the school. They also practised their watercolour painting skills by producing poppies to display in the classroom and communal areas. The children created their own Remembrance Day poem and performed it as part of their English lesson. A wreath was also laid at the WWI memorial statue by service children.

Week 8 (Nothe Fort Visit)

To start of their new history topic of WWII, Sycamore Class went to visit Nothe Fort in Weymouth. They learned about schooling, air raids and shopping amongst many other aspects of WWII. They were excellently behaved and have gained invaluable knowledge from which to start their topic.

Week 6 (Hello Yellow)

To support and raise awareness of mental health, Sycamore Class dressed up in yellow and created an emotion board with every feeling we could think of. We also practised our French oral skills by having casual discussions in a cafe (imagination needed).

Week 5 (Harvest Festival)

This week, we celebrated Harvest with an assembly led by Rev. David and a group of KS2 students, and Sycamore’s Evie Smith read a lovely prayer for us. Later in the week, Sycamore delivered their class assembly on the Christian value of respect, with some excellent acting from Emmanuel, Ben C, Siobhan and Anastasia. We rounded off the week in one of the best ways possible…puppies!!!

Week 4 (Arts Week)

Sycamore celebrated Somerset Arts Week by completing some wonderful activities set by our special guest, Carolyn Lefley. We experimented with colour and texture by sketching out fossils, customising them to suit our individual art styles. Thank you for visiting us, Carolyn!

Week 3 (Arts Week)

As Somerset Arts Week approaches, Sycamore started exploring the theme of ‘Sanctuary’ by drawing and sharing things that bring them peace. We have learned lots more about each other and can’t wait to explore this idea more next week with our special guest, Carolyn Lefley.

Week 2 (Assessments, Art and Science)

After a busy week of assessments, Sycamore have been learning how to shade to create dimension and shadows in Art. Here they are using this skill to bring objects to life!

We have also been learning how to classify different species using classification keys. The children came up with some great Yes/No questions to help us categorise vertebrates and invertebrates, and used a range of scientific terminology. Well done, Sycamore!
