Year 2 - Maple Class

Dividing Equally

We have been learning about using the inverse and commutativity to answer division questions in maths. Today we used counters to explore how many equal groups we could make with 30 counters.

Welcome Back To School!

Happy new year everyone and a very warm welcome back to school! We are looking forward to getting back into routine and hearing all about your Christmas holidays.

Designing Ferris Wheels

In our design and technology lessons, we have been learning about wheels and axles. We were given a design brief to build a Ferris wheel with a sturdy base, a working wheel and pods to fit at least eight people. We worked in pairs to build our designs.

Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra

Year 2 were very lucky to have some special visitors from BSO this morning. They introduced us to instruments that we had never seen before, and showed us how to play them. We then worked in teams to create a tune with words to match on the theme of ‘new horizons’. We performed our songs to each other and enjoyed learning all about classical music.

No Peeking Mums and Dads!!! :Recycled Tea Light Holders
In science we have been learning about materials and their properties. We have been thinking about our use of plastic and the impact it has on the environment. As such, we have been thinking about how we can reduce, reuse and recycle objects. We have made tealight holders out of old jam jars to make a recycled Christmas gift for a loved one.

The First Christmas

We are busy putting the finishing touches to our nativity play and can’t wait to perform to our mummies and daddies next week. Hope to see you all there!

A Surprise Visitor!

We were very excited to see our surprise visitor this afternoon who popped in to say congratulations for raising so much money for Children In Need. Thank you Pudsey!

Bovington Tank Museum

As part of our History work on Remembrance, we visited Bovington Tank Museum. It was incredible to see such a variety of tanks close up and realise how huge they are. We saw the cramped conditions that the soldiers have to endure inside and we even got to experience what life in the trenches was like. The children enjoyed collecting the stamps around the exhibitions and trying on some of the uniforms from different time periods. A great day was had by all!

Jewish Dance Workshop
As part of our Inter Faith Week celebrations we took part in a dance workshop led by Kerri Hill. She taught us how to do a Jewish wedding dance and Maple Class were very good at it!

Remembrance Day

Today we joined the rest of the school to observe the two minute silence for Remembrance Day.

Printmaking

Today we completed our map making Art unit by created a foam tile design which we then covered in ink to print from. This was the children's first experience of lino printing, and they all loved it!

Partitioning Numbers

Maple Class have been working hard on our understanding of place value. We demonstrated our knowledge by partitioning numbers in as many different ways we could using our number bonds and chips and peas.

Hello Yellow Day 2024

Today we celebrated World Mental Health Day by coming to school dressed in yellow.

We discussed what mental health is and how we've all felt happy, sad, angry, worried, calm and loved at different times in our lives.

Spirituality

In Year 2 we have been thinking about what spirituality means to us and we came up with five definitions that we believe define it.

Felt Making

Last week, we designed maps to show our routes to school. We included the things that we see along the way, but added things from our imaginations, too. Today we each chose a section of our maps to put towards a piece of artwork. We used wool roving to make felt, starting with a a white background and then building up the colours to represent our designs.

National Poetry Day!

Maple class demonstrated their incredible imaginations today when writing a class poem. Mrs Rich was very impressed with all of their ideas and their brilliant use of rhyming words. Well done Maple Class!

There were once two stars in the sky

Shining brightly at night.

When it was day, they hid away

as the sun was too light.

Under the stars a little boy lay

dreaming of adventures in the sky

Max liked to count the stars shining up high.

Max fell asleep whilst dreaming by the bay

high up in the sky the glittering stars lay.

Dreaming of adventures far, far away

of his lost little cat who had run away

the brown fluffy cat was called Molly

and she carried a spotty white brolly

Molly ran because of a big scary dog

she was saved when it fell into a big soggy bog

Max woke up when he heard a meow in his dream

and he saw little molly walking through a beam

she was smiling and was happy to find her friend

and they lived happily ever after.

The end.

Harvest Festival

Today was our harvest festival. Rev. Keen came to lead our worship. Well done to Oliver and Dinaka from Cedar Class who read beautifully.

Place Value Using Straws

We have been thinking about the value of each digit in a 2-digit number. We represented these numbers using straws. There were bundles of 10 straws and individual straws. We then thought about 1/10 more/less than our numbers.

Welcome to Maple Class

It was lovely to welcome everyone back to school today and start to get to know everyone in Maple Class! Everyone was keen to get started with their learning and have impressed us with their work already. In our English lesson, we talked about all of the exciting things that we got up to over the summer break. We also thought about some crazy, fantastic things that we had NOT done. We wrote sentences, remembering to use capital letters, finger spaces and full stops and then we collated our ideas to create a class poem.
