Happy Easter 🐣
Well done to Pine Class who have worked so hard this term. We hope you have a wonderful, well deserved Easter break and we look forward to seeing you after Easter.
Easter Gardens
The children have worked hard to understand and recall the sequence of the Easter story. They are now aware of the importance of Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Saturday and Easter Sunday.
Today we made Easter Gardens to represent the garden where Jesus was alive again on Easter Sunday.
Bring a Book and Share
Thank you to our superstar reader who read the ‘Highway Rat’ beautifully for us all to hear. What an excellent reader you are.
Sharing Our Faith
It was wonderful to hear about the festival of Eid and its importance to Muslims. Thank you to our expert who shared her experience of Eid and gave us special Eid gifts.
Purple Day
Today we supported our classmate by learning about Epilepsy and how it affects people differently.
We were all really pleased to have such a special friend with epilepsy who thoughtfully gave each of us a purple ribbon or badge to wear.
Thank you superstar 🌟
DT Design and Make a Dessert
Pine Class have enjoyed this term’s DT project and they have creatively designed their own fruit dessert. There were so many delicious fruits to choose from that some children struggled to leave room for the jelly, custard and cream. However everyone made a dessert and they were happy with the finished product.
Well done Pine Class.
Cricket in P.E
It was wonderful to participate in a cricket session led by ‘All Stars’ today. Pine class were well behaved and all demonstrated good bat and ball skills as they hit 3 balls from a tee, using a cricket bat.
There was some good teamwork as they fielded the ball too. Well done to Pine Class, fantastic commitment and determination was shown today 🏃🏽♀️
Our Visit to Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm
We all had a fun day at Noah’s Ark today where we stood alongside our friends to see some amazing animals. The children behaved well as we moved around a very cold zoo, finding all the different animals and their babies.
We were very lucky today as all the animals wanted to be seen but this made it difficult for us to choose one favourite - they were all fantastic!
Thank you to our parent helpers who made the trip possible, what a wonderful day!
Science Fair
Whizz, Pop, Bang!
As part of Science Fortnight we were invited to explore the science fair and learn from other children in the school. It was great to see the hard work the children had put into their projects at home and it was wonderful to hear them explain their ideas scientifically.
Thank you to the children in our class who entered the science fair, each of you covered a different area of science and you were little stars as you demonstrated your ideas. Well done 👏
Bring a Book and Share
Thank you to these two wonderful boys who selected their favourite books from home to bring in to school and share with us.
We enjoyed a rhyming story on Monday and a funny story on Tuesday, both were beautifully read. Great work superstars 💫
World Book Day
Wow! What an amazing selection of costumes we had for World Book Day today. Thank you to all our parents who have taken the time to find us a costume to wear to school to celebrate this wonderful day of books.
Shrove Tuesday
Year 1 had a good time learning about Shrove Tuesday and its importance to Christians. We found out that Christians have pancakes on Shrove Tuesday to use up the rich ingredients before Lent begins on Ash Wednesday.
The children described the exciting pancake toppings they were hoping to have on their pancakes and they sounded delicious 😋
We also held a pancake race where we tossed our ‘pancakes’ as we ran across the playground. It was great fun and some of us were really good at flipping the pancakes - some of the teachers were unfortunately not as good!
Bring a Book and Share
Thank you to our superstar 🌟 reader this week who carried a really heavy Bible to school! We enjoyed the story you shared with us and your wonderful discussion about the story.
Transparency
This half term, we are learning about materials and their properties in our Science lessons. Today our lesson was about transparent materials. We talked about the importance of using transparent materials for specific jobs and we decided that it was safe for glasses to have transparent lenses.
We used transparent, coloured film to make our own stylish glasses 🤓
Disco Day
A big thank you to our wonderful volunteers at the PTA who organised a fun disco for us on Friday. The children had a fantastic time demonstrating their amazing dancing skills and showing off their fancy disco outfits.
Science
In Science this half-term, we have been learning about plants; the parts of a plant and what makes plants grow best. We planned and conducted our own experiments to see which media was the best for seed germination and plant growth.
Many of the children were confident that compost would be the best for growing healthy plants but some of us were curious to try growing seeds in stones, cotton wool and sand. We were surprised by our findings as every child managed to grow some cress but on closer inspection, those who used compost had more plants and their plants looked much healthier.
Well done Pine Class, this was a wonderful experiment.
Story Telling Week
Pine Class celebrated National Story Telling Week by making our own moving books to retell the story of Rapunzel. We used a range of skills and materials to create colourful representations of the story. Later we added split pins and levers to make different parts move.
We were proud of our finished books so we took them to Oak Class and shared them with our friends in Reception. It was a fun afternoon and the Reception children were very careful as they moved the characters and the pages.
Bring a Book and Share
Thank you to our wonderful children who brought their books in from home and confidently shared them with the class. We laughed at these fun stories and we loved the pictures too.
Well done superstars ⭐️
Chinese New Year
This week we had fun learning about Chinese New Year and the story of the ‘Great Race’. The children enjoyed learning about the year in which they were born and the animal representing their year. It was interesting to learn about the qualities of our animals and think about whether we share the same character attributes.
We concluded our week by making paper chain snakes 🐍 and eating Chinese food. It was a wonderful week in Pine Class.
Computing
We had a wonderful time working in groups to program a BeeBot and make him move to our friends. Although some of our algorithms were a little bit wrong, it was great fun watching BeeBot move across the table in all directions and some of us even managed to get it to a friend successfully!
Science Walk
Our Science topic this half term is growing plants so this week we have been outside looking at some of the beautiful plants growing in our school gardens. The children each found a favourite plant and they are beginning to discuss the different parts of the plants and how they help it to grow. Well done Pine Superstars 🌟
Happy New Year
Well done to all of our children who have returned to school with a positive attitude to learning and real dedication to their work. This week the children have written some amazing retells of Jack and the beanstalk and they have worked hard to add 2,5 and 10 to a given number.
Fantastic work Pine Class 🌟
Christmas Party
We had a wonderful last day today and we are now ready for Christmas!
Well done Pine Class, you have worked really hard this term and you all deserve a rest. Have an amazing Christmas with your family and enjoy your snowman biscuit.
MERRY CHRISTMAS 🎅🏻 🎄
Father Christmas brought us some gifts
Thank you to our wonderful P.T.A who arranged for Father Christmas to come to school and bring us some amazing gifts.
We can’t wait to use our new toys in the new year.
Christmas in the Church
KS1 led an amazing service in the church today. Well done to Year 2 for their beautiful readings and thank you to the Year 1 children who changed into their Nativity costumes and sat beautifully as the tableau was assembled at the front of the church.
Special thanks to Rev. David Keen who welcomed us to his church and reminded us about the importance of Christmas. We are all feeling Christmassy now.
Wooden Snowmen
We had fun applying our woodwork skills to make our own snowmen. The children sanded the wood and painted it, then they had to wait for the white paint to dry. Sometime later, they crafted their own individual snowman and added a sock hat and scarf. We are looking forward to taking our cheeky snowmen home for Christmas.
Bring a Book and Share
Thank you to our fantastic readers who have confidently shared their stories with us. We enjoyed your chosen books and your wonderful delivery, well done girls ⭐️

We have been having a fun time in Pine Class, making our own animal puppets. The children demonstrated good skills in sewing and they used their creativity to make their plain puppets look like their favourite animals. Well done to all the children ⭐️
A Special Visit from the North Pole
What an exciting day we had at Preston C of E Primary School today when a helicopter arrived carrying Father Christmas. We waved, we cheered and we smiled as the helicopter approached our field and landed on the grass. The helicopter was loud and impressive but it was even better when we saw Father Christmas and one of his elves climb out and walk over to see us all. We gave Father Christmas our class letter and we hope he makes it back home safely.
Bring a Book and Share
We enjoyed the story of the Princess 👸 and the Frog 🐸 today. Thank you to our star ⭐️ reader who ‘let her light shine’ as she shared this book with us.
Sponsored Fun Run
It was a chilly day on Friday but we had a fun time competing in our sponsored run. The Year 1 children gathered on the field to complete as many laps of the field as we could. Some of us started fast and soon slowed down whereas others of us started at a steady pace and managed to run several laps of the field. Well done to each of the children who gave their all to this sponsored event and thank you so much to our sponsors. We can’t wait to hear the total raised for our school charity ‘School in a Bag’.
Let it Snow!
The snow may have only made a brief visit to Yeovil but that didn’t stop us going outside the classroom to touch it and discover how cold it made our hands.
Children in Need
It has been a busy week in Pine class, learning about Pudsey bear and how he helps to raise money for children all over the UK. Pine class showed great empathy for the children and parents who are given money from the Children in Need charity, well done Year 1.

RSPCA Visit
Today we spent time learning about hedgehogs 🦔 and how we can help to keep them safe. Alex from the RSPCA came into school to remind us about the importance of disposing of our rubbish responsibly to make sure we are helping the wild animals to stay safe.
We listened carefully to Alex as she showed us a selection of the animals helped by West Hatch RSPCA and we were pleased to see how the animals had recovered.
After, we were shown how to make our own clay hedgehogs using spaghetti for the spikes. We enjoyed making our souvenirs of the day!
Odd Socks Day
Thank you to our fantastic parents who found some wonderful odd socks for us to wear to school to mark the start of Anti-Bullying week. At Preston C of E Primary we understand the importance of every child feeling safe and happy in our school and we do not tolerate bullying. Anti-bullying week is a good time to remind children about being kind to each other and about what we should do if we are feeling sad.
Inter-Faith Week
This week we are celebrating Inter-Faith week where we will be looking at a range of religions and thinking about how they use light in their celebrations.
Thank you to Kerri Hill who came to school to teach us a Jewish dance to begin our Inter -Faith week. We showed great co-ordination and wonderful listening skills as we followed Kerri’s lead. Well done Pine Class.
Remembrance
Well done to all our children who stood silently and respectfully as we observed the 2 minutes silence to remember those who have lost their lives or been injured in war.
Fireworks in Pine Class

Bring a Book and Share
Thank you to our star reader who brought in this humorous story about a mouse that thinks it is a tiger. We all enjoyed your story and your enthusiasm as you guided us though this funny book. Great work superstar 💫
Welcome to our new Sign
You may have noticed our sign in the Welcome garden (made by our current Year 6 when they were in Year 1) is getting a bit old and a bit tired. Do not worry, Year 1 have been working hard to make a new sign to brighten up the Welcome garden and give it a new lease of life!
We hope you enjoy seeing how we used our talents to create a new sign.
Maths
We had a lot of fun making repeating patterns in maths this week. We started with simple patterns, then we challenged ourselves to make longer patterns to repeat. Well done to the children who demonstrated great perseverance in repeating the patterns successfully.
Bring a Book and Share
Thank you to this week’s superstar 🌟 who enthusiastically shared their wonderful book with us. Well done for guiding us through your counting book so beautifully.
Mask Making
Darrell Wakelam came to Year 1 today to show us how to make amazing animal masks. We were lucky to have Darrell and some wonderful parents to help us to each produce our own stunning mask. After looking at a selection of animal pictures, we challenged the parents to help us with some detailed designs and the parents were dedicated to fold card and perfect the shapes required to complete the mask.
We hope you enjoy looking at our masks and we thank Darrell and the parents for all their support.

Today we learnt about the seasonal changes as we move from summer to autumn. We enjoyed avoiding the prickles to open the seed cases from a horse-chestnut tree to discover the conker seed.
Bring a Book and Share
Thank you to out confident superstar who beautifully read this humorous book to us. We enjoyed this story today, well done 🌟

A Surprise Visit
One of our children had a special surprise today when visitors from the Parish Council arrived to congratulate her on raising money for charity by doing a sponsored walk. Our little superstar was over the moon to be presented with a gift voucher as a thank you for her hard work in the community.
Well done superstar 🌟
Using the Computer Keyboard
This week we used the keyboard on our iPads to type in our spellings and practise them with our partner. We then used our finger to rewrite the spellings as we practised them ready for our Friday test.
Geography
We had fun using the compasses today to find North, South, East and West. The children worked with a partner to identify different objects at each of the compass points. Well done children, you even managed to agree on the directions.
Observational Drawing
Our beautiful harvest loaf was a wonderful stimulus for our observational drawing this week. The children made careful observations before exploring tones and shades as they used their art pencil to create a 2d representation of the loaf. Well done to Pine class for their fantastic efforts.
Harvest Festival
Our Harvest Festival was an excellent start to our school week. Thank you to our wonderful parents who kindly donated food for the ‘Lord’s Larder’. We had a beautiful display of food at the front of the school hall and we are sure this will provide many families with the food they need over the next few weeks.
Thank you to Revd. David Keen for leading our service and teaching us about the importance of sharing our food with those less fortunate than ourselves. Also, a big thank you to our two readers who wrote beautiful prayers which the shared with the other children in our Harvest Featival.

We Went on a Bear Hunt
Pine Class had an exciting time following some paw-prints in search of a bear. We went through the door, along the path and into the woods. Eventually we found the bear hiding in a tree. Luckily the bear wasn’t real so we were all able to give him a big hug.
The Owls Came to Visit
A massive thank you to our wonderful PTA who arranged for ‘Owl Obsession’ to come into school and show us their beautiful owls. Pine class had an amazing time learning about owls and we were delighted to be able to stroke the birds too. What a fantastic start to our third week in Year 1.

Exploring Our Senses
In our science lessons, we have been exploring our senses. We loved exploring touch, sight and sound but some of us were less pleased to explore the smell and taste senses!
Bring a Book and Share
We enjoyed two wonderful stories this week, shared by our star readers. We were worried about Stickman and how he was going to get home to his family. But Bluey made us smile when she realised how much fun she could have.
Thank you to our Superstars 💫
Welcome to Year 1
We have had a wonderful start to the term in Pine Class. It was an absolute pleasure to welcome the amazing children back to school and we were pleased to see how quickly each child settled into the new routines. Well done to all the children for their fantastic efforts throughout the week and thank you to our super parents who have made sure their children look smart and have a good attitude to learning.
We are looking forward to working with the children and watching them grow and develop throughout the year.
Geography
As part of our Geography curriculum, we explored the school grounds to find our favourite part of the school. It was a very soggy walk but we all managed to find a special feature to discuss back in the classroom. The weather didn’t stop us learning and most of the children were able to share a smile too!
Well Done
Congratulations to our superstar children who have ‘let their lights shine’ outside of School. This week we enjoyed hearing about the success of our amazing swimmer and our dedicated reader.
Well done girls 🌟👏
This Week’s Shining Lights
