Year 2 trip to Magdalen Farm - Tuesday 4th July 2023
Our lovely Year 2 went on a visit to Magdalen Farm to investigate habitats as part of their summer science topic.
Despite the drizzly conditions, the children had an amazing day immersing themselves in nature and learning how animals adapt themselves to suit their surroundings. The children were able to walking through the shallow part of the River Axe to use nets to see what they can catch in their nets to see up close.
The children learnt so much and are now looking forward to consolidating their knowledge back in the classroom. We thank the rangers and staff at Magdalen Farm for their expertise and activities.
Yeovil Together School Art Competition - Sunday 2nd July 2023
Children with English as a second language skillfully created a hanging art installation to celebrate their culture as part of the Yeovil Together Project. The art work included postcards featuring pictures of things that are important to them alongside a piece of writing about what makes their country so special to them.
We were delighted to be awarded 3rd place in the competition and to receive a wonderful certificate and rosette for display in our school.
A huge thank you to all the children, Mrs Rich and Miss Taylor for their effort in making this wonderful art display and giving us the opportunity to take part.
Wimbledon Finals - Tuesday 28th June 2023
After the last few weeks of heats and semi-finals, our KS2 Wimbledon Finals took place.
The finalists demonstrated a huge amount of skills and perseverance to skillfully wins their way through to the finals, and ultimately win!
Well done to all the competitors and for our supportive audience.
Year 3 (Whitebeam) Tennis enrichment event - Monday 26th June 2023
Whitebeam seized the chance to visit Johnson Park for a morning of tennis with Luke Andrews and his team.
The children were given the opportunity to develop their tennis skills through a range of short, sharp tennis skills and games that they could practise in games.
The children had an amazing time and took a lot from the sessions that they could bring back to school and apply in their P.E lessons.
We thank Luke and his team for their time and expertise.
Friday 23rd June 2023 - Yeovil Together Project
Our EAL children came together to create a very special art installation for the Yeovil Together Project. The project aims to promote diversity and cultural awareness through a variety of themes: art, dance, food and performance.
The children created their own individual postcards to explain something about their nationality; the postcards will to added to a chandelier style art installation to showcase all their different nationalities and what makes each of them so special.
We are looking forward to seeing this special creation at the Yeovil Together Project Exhibition on Sunday 2nd July at Westlands Entertainment Venue, Yeovil.
Special thanks go to all the children for their efforts with the assistance of Mrs Rich (Art & Design Lead) and Miss Taylor (Languages Lead).
Wednesday 21st June - EYFS visit to The Sealife Centre, Weymouth
Our lovely EYFS children took a trip to the Sealife Centre as part of their 'Under the Sea' topic.
The children were enthralled looking at all the different types of sea creatures including: stingrays, seahorses, tropical fish and jellyfish to name but a few! They learnt lots of interesting facts about the animals including how animals change colours to adapt to their surroundings.
The finished their day out by a fun visit to the playpark; they thoroughly enjoyed the adventure of being out with their classmates learning in a different way.
Wednesday 21st June 2023 - KS2 Sports Day
The good weather held out for KS2 to showcase their sporting abilities, team work and resilience at our annual Sports Day event.
It was wonderful to watch all the children participate and enjoy themselves with their parents, grandparents and friends looking on.
Well done to all of KS for their effort and we look forward to doing it all again next week for KS1.
Tuesday 20th June 2023 - Children's Hospice South West
As our current school charity, Children's Hospice South West has been an integral part of our school fundraising activity over the last year. Throughout the year, our School Council have been proactive in finding new ways to raise much needed funds to support the charity.
We were fortunate enough to receive a visit from one of the charity's representative, Kylie. The School Council took the opportunity to learn more about the charity and understand how the money we have donated is spent. The children were full of interesting questions and now have an even better understanding of the outstanding work the charity does to support families in need of their support.
We can't wait to think of new and exciting ways to raise money this half term!
Friday 16th June - Inter Trust Poetry Recital
Children from Year 2 up have been busy practising their oracy skills in readiness for a Inter- Trust Poetry Recital.
Children were given a selection of poems to learn and perform in front of an audience over a series of rounds. The winners were announced as:
The winning children from Preston will now go onto the final to be held at Manor Court Primary School next Thursday evening; they will compete against the winners from our 8 other Trust schools. The winners will be judged by a distinguished panel of guests including: The Mayor of Chard, Chair of the Local Rotary Club, a librarian from Chard Library and our Trust CEO, Mrs Bernie Green.

KS1 finalists from Preston
Thursday 15th June 2023 - Family Learning, Circus Skills
Mrs Chislett invited the Year 2 parents in to participate in a circus skills workshop.
Using their balance and hand eye coordination skills, the children undertook some very tricky skills and apparatus with the support and encouragement of their parents. The activities included: the tightrope, plate spinning, juggling alongside dressing up as clowns!
We thank all the parents and circus skills hosts for coming in to work alongside the children in this fun packed event.
Wednesday 14th June 2023 - Year 5 Westfield Academy DT afternoon
A selection of Year 5s visited Westfield Academy's Design Technology Department to work on a project with their Head of Technology, Miss Blackmore.
Children were set a challenge to make a 'game in a box' which required them to craft a wooden box for their game using a range of different tools and equipment. The children were amazed by the facilities and absolutely loved using the workshop equipment laid on by the staff at Westfield.
The session was part of our collaboration work with local secondary schools to further enhance our design technology curriculum and promote depth of understanding for the skills taught.
We thank all the staff members at Westfield for the time and the chance for the children to return in a few weeks time.

Thursday 8th June 2023 - Year 5 Forest School
Year 5 were thrilled to engage in another Forest School session with visiting Forest School Teacher, Heidi.
The children had a wonderful time learning outdoors through activities including: den building, marshmallow toasting, wood whittling, playing in the mud kitchen and fire lighting.
Watching the improvements in the children's confidence, resilience and perseverance was wonderful to see and we look forward to further outdoor learning opportunities in the weeks ahead.
Thursday 8th June 2023 - World Ocean Day
EYFS has a very special treat in the form of a visit from a Marine Biologist to celebrate World Ocean Day!
The children were fascinated learning about the levels of the sea and the creatures that live in each level; they even took their learning outside to recreate the size of a whale! They asked lots of interesting questions and listened really carefully to what was said.
To consolidate their learning, the children also made their very own jellyfish and octopus whilst applying their EYFS goals and skills to the tasks. They all had a fabulous day and can't wait to learn more about some of the creatures they talked about in the future.

Friday 26th May 2023 - School Council non-uniform
Our fabulous School Council organised a non-uniform day to raise funds for our school charity, Children's Hospice South West.
It is wonderful to see how passionate the school councillors feel about supporting the charity and we look to seeing the charity's spokesperson in school soon.
Thursday 25th May 2023 - Knitted Bible Stories at St.James' Church
The whole school was invited to St. James' church by the Rev. David Keen to see their wonderful exhibition of knitted Bible stories.
The children were able to see lots of very familiar Bible stories brought to life in 3D knitted scenes. They used all their knowledges for Collective Worship and R.E lessons to ask deep and meaningful questions about the scenes they saw.
We are thankful to the church and its parishioners for allowing us the opportunity to visit the church to see fabulous exhibit.
Thursday 25th May 2023 - Year 3 trip to Somerset Earth Centre
Our lovely Year 3s took a trip to Somerset Earth Centre to learn about rocks as soils as part of their science topic.
They were fortunate enough to have a short tour of the quarry and time in the education centre to learn more about specific types of rocks and how they are drilled and blasted from the quarry.
Wednesday 24th and Thursday 25th May 2023 - Year 5 production of 'Dream On'
Our wonderful Year 5s took to the stage this week in their production of 'Dream on'.
Set in the magical world of Athens, the play takes place in Ancient Greece and is based on a Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare. The story follows the story of Lysander, Demetrius, Hermia and Helena who are four people who fall in and out of love due to mysterious fairies.
The play linked to the children's geography and history topics of Ancient Greece and required the children to learn some very challenging vocabulary through a vast array of characters.
We are incredibly proud of all the children who have worked tirelessly on this production over the past half term. Special thanks go to the children and adults who helped on sound, staging, lighting and costumes.
Monday 22nd May 2023 - Cricket Engagement Day
Year 5 and 6 (and selected Yr 3/4) seized the opportunity to work with Somerset Cricket Foundation to develop and enhance their cricket skills as part of an enrichment activity.
The children really enjoyed developing their techniques with professional coaches which they can take back to their P.E lessons and after school clubs.
We thank Somerset Cricket Foundation for their time and commitment to the sport.
Yeovil Community Arts Association - Young Writers' Competition 2023
As in previous years, Years 5/6 took part in this annual local writing event. This year, the theme was 'courage' and children were required to write a piece of story writing that demonstrated high level of creativity, skills and grammatical ability.
We were thrilled that one of our Year 6 children, Siobhan, won her age category for Year 5/6 across the large number of entrants from across the town. In addition to winning her age category, she was also awarded second place overall winner!
Well done Siobhan for your exceptional efforts and to all the other children who entered this prestigious local competition.
Monday 15th May - Friday 19th May - Year 6 Residential to Bude
After all their hard work in the SATs, Year 6 took a well deserved break to Bude, Cornwall for their week long residential.
With the sun shining, the children experienced a wide array of activities making memories that will last them a life time. They all challenged their fears and tried a wide range of activities including: body boarding, kayaking, caving, walks, climbing and high ropes amongst others.
For those children who didn't attend the residential, Miss Feltham provided the children with some wonderful activities including cooking, Forest School, bowling and arts and crafts.
All of Year 6 had a wonderful week and are now looking forward to their final half term with us and all the special activities that await them.
Thank you to all the teachers and centre staff for making this such as a memorable experience for the children.
Friday 19th May 2023 - Year 5 Headteacher's Tea Party with Mrs Hodgson
A selection of hardworking Year 5s joined Mrs Hodgson for her tea party to celebrate their individual achievements for attitude to learning, kindness and effort in class.
It was lovely to hear the children talk about what they have been working on with such passion and enthusiasm.

Friday 19th May 2023 - EYFS - Owl Stories
Reception had some very special visitors in the form of real life owls from the Owl Enlightenment Rescue.
The children were enthralled by the array of owls shown, and they learnt a lot of interesting facts to support their current topic of 'Owl Babies'. They couldn't believe how small and fluffy some of the owls were or how close they were able to approach them!
Friday 19th May 2023 - Year 1 take Maths outdoors
Our lovely Year 1s took their learning outdoors to tackle problem solving with division. Children used hoops, beans bags and ball to solve division word problems through practical sharing.
Crochet Club - Thursday 18th May 2023
Last term, Miss Johnston and Miss Hirst held a crochet and knitting club for children in KS2. The children learnt the tricky skills involved in these crafts and thoroughly enjoyed making simple items to practise with.
The children are looking forward to using their new found talents as part of their future textiles units in DT, and outside of school for pleasure.
Friday 12th May 2023 - Famous nurses workshop
Year 2 took part in an immersive workshop from The Somerset Museum Service to support their history topic on 'famous nurses'.
The children learnt about: Mary Seacole, Florence Nightingale and Edith Cavell and the impact they made within their field. They experienced life as either a solider or nurse in the Scutari hospital through dressing up in authentic costumes, trying their hands at bandaging, designing a healthy meal to build up war time soldiers and looking at replica artefacts from the time period.
The children had a wonderful time and all agreed how different life was for the soldiers and nurses who lived through the Crimean War compared to their own today.
Wednesday 10th May 2023 - Year 4 visit to London
Our wonderful Year 4s took an exciting trip to London to visit the Ancient Egyptian Exhibition at the British Museum as part of their history topic on the Ancient Egyptians.
The children were in awe of the incredible artefacts and exhibits in the museum, and learnt so much about how the Ancient Egyptians lived and worshipped; they even saw the sights and points of interest as they travelled through the centre of London!
What a wonderful experience for all the children!
Coronation Day - Friday 5th May 2023
What a wonderful day when our whole school came together to celebrate the Coronation of King Charles III! The school was awash with a sea of red, white and blue to mark this momentous occasion.
The children congregated in the morning for our whole school assembly where we learnt more about the Coronation ceremony. We were joined by the Mayor of Yeovil and our Invincibles Military Club also read readings and prayers for the new King.
Children participated in a range of different arts and crafts activities whilst learning about different countries within the Commonwealth. In the afternoon, the whole school were treated to a scrumptious ice-cream and drink courtesy of our wonderful PTA as part of our celebrations. Our choir performed a selection of songs with other year groups showcases their own songs and dances; Year 1 performed an incredible rendition of 'I just can't wait to be King!' from the Lion King. To end the day, the whole school took part in a parade around the school playground to show off their costumes and crafts to the school and parents.
We are so lucky to have such a vibrant school community to mark this special occasion with. Thank you to all the staff, children and parents for all of their efforts in making this happen.
Coronation Garden - Wednesday 3rd May 2023
Year 1 have been hard at work creating a spectacular Coronation garden! The garden is full of regal items including a handmade willow carriage complete with horses and a special Coronation banner created by our very own Ms Davies.
Special thanks to our Year 1 team for their creativity and enthusiasm in creating this incredible display; we have been inundated with positive comments from the children and parents about this special installation feature at the front of our school.
Invincibles Military Club, wear purple day -Friday 28th April 2023
Our Invincibles Military Club wore purple to celebrate April as being the 'Month of the Military Child'.
Purple signifies the joint environment of the military and brings together all the individuals forces colours into one. The children took pride in selecting individual items with purple on them to raise awareness within their school community.
Wellbeing quilt project - Friday 28th April 2023
Over the past few months, members of the school community have been constructing our wellbeing quilt from the individual squares created by children and staff. We hope the quilt will be completed by June reading for its final reveal as part of our summer arts exhibition.
Our special thanks go to Ms Davies for her fantastic quilting skills and patience in putting together this fabulous project.
Author visit - Tuesday 25th April 2023
A.F. Steadman, author of Skandar and the Unicorn Thief, visited our school to share the brilliant series with us. Her debut novel, Skandar and the Unicorn Thief, has won the Waterstones Children's book of the year alongside many other awards, so we were privileged to welcome her. Her latest release, Skandar and the Phantom Rider, is being made into a motion picture by Sony, and production is soon to be underway.
Years 4, 5 and 6 were lucky enough to meet the author in person and immerse themselves in creating their very own unicorn and rider, and find out what their magical element would be! The children thoroughly enjoyed listening to the author describe the inspiration for her series of books from the Skandar series and have had lots of inspiration for their own writing.
Year 4 Tea party with Mrs Hodgson - Friday 21st April 2023
Six of our hard working Year 4s took the opportunity to join Mrs Hodgson for a tea party to celebrate their individual achievements over recent weeks.
The children were selected by their teachers for a variety of reasons including: kindness, compassion, attitude to learning and giving back to their school community. The children enjoyed tea, cakes and conversation with Mrs Hodgson to celebrate their achievements. Congratulations to all the children who attended.
KS1 Easter Service - Thursday 30th March 2023
The whole of KS1 was awash with spring colours in the form of headdresses for their Easter Service. Parents were invited into school to join in our special assembly to celebrate this important event in our school's Christian calendar.
Year 4 production, 'Rock Bottom' - Tuesday 28th & Wednesday 29th March 2023 (
Year 4's production of Rock Bottom quite literally blew everyone away! The singing, choreography, lines and singing was quite simply spectacular! Everyone who watched it had the same thing to say, 'Wow!'.
We are immensely proud of all the children and staff for staging such an incredible performance worthy of any professional stage. Well done to all those who were involved.
Crazy Scientist Dress up Day - Friday 24th March 2023
What an end to our science fortnight! The children seized the opportunity to dress as 'Crazy Scientists' for a fun-filled day of science activities and practical experiments.
The children looked incredible and it was a fitting end to our fortnight of science visits, experiments and learning; we have certainly ignited the passion of lots of young scientists!
A special thanks to our Science Lead, Mrs Chambers, for her enthusiasm with organising such an array of activities for our wonderful children to benefit from.
Joyeuses Paques! Wednesday 22nd March 2023
To support their French curriculum, Year 5 demonstrated their French sentence writing skills by creating Easter cards for their French pen pals.
The children's Easter cards included a poem that the children had written with a focus on colours and animals; we look forward to receiving their replies in the weeks ahead.
Year 2 Great Fire of London Workshop - Friday 17th March 2023
Our Year 2s had a visit from Sharon who works for the Somerset Heritage Service who ran a workshop on the Great Fire of London.
The children had the opportunity to try out many different activities including: putting out a fire using fabric buckets, writing letters to the Secretary using quill and ink, dressing up in period costumes and handling artefacts from this period in history.
Space Explorer Dome - Thursday 16th March 2023
As part of our science fortnight, selected year groups had the opportunity to take a tour through the galaxy to learn about the different atmospheres on other planets and star constellations. It was a thrilling, immersive experience and one which the children thoroughly enjoyed.
Wednesday 15th March - Whole School Science Fair
To mark British Science Week 2023, our Science Lead organised a whole school 'science fortnight' with a range of different science visitors, workshops, events and science experiments to share the joy of science throughout the school.
To showcase children's scientific talents. a 'Science Fair' was held in the school hall for children to bring in and share their science experiments and displays created at home with the whole school. Each class were allotted a time to visit the fair and get hands on with the exhibits on display; the experiment creators were able to articulate their scientific knowledge with confidence and passion.
All the children had an amazing experience and thoroughly enjoyed the day.
Year 6 trip to Ninesprings - Tuesday 28th March & Friday 3rd March 2023
Year 6 took the opportunity to visit Ninesprings Country Park to learn more about their local environment and the history of Yeovil as part of their history topic.
The children enjoyed a range of different forest school activities to immerse themselves in the past with the park Ranger. Despite the chilly weather, they had a wonderful time and learnt a lot about local history.
Maths on the Move - Friday 3rd March 2023
Some of our lovely Year 1s have been enjoying working with 'Maths on the Move' every Friday morning. The sessions aim to further enhance their maths skills through learning in a practical, contextual way using the National Curriculum objectives through sport.
The children are gaining new skills and learning to apply their understanding in different ways; we look forward to continuing our sessions with the team over the coming weeks.
World Book Day 2023 - Thursday 2nd March 2023
The school was awash with a sea of vibrant colour to mark World Book Day 2023. All the children enjoyed dressing up as their favourite book character and expressing their love of reading through a variety of different organised activities such as 'Stop, drop and read' and book sharing. The children were also given the opportunity to meet real life authors and use their WBC book token in the Scholastic Book Fair!
It was so fantastic to see the school come together to share the joy that reading brings!
EYFS People in our community - vet visit - Tuesday 28th February 2023
Our wonderful EYFS children welcomed a visit from the a vet from the Kingston Veterinary Group, Abbey Manor Park, to talk to the children about the work they do in caring and treating animals.
The children particularly enjoyed trying on the vet's surgical scrubs and looking at the Vet's x-rays to guess what the animal had swallowed in error!
Author visit from Tom McLaughlin - Tuesday 28th February 2023
The whole school received a visit from South West author and illustrator, Tom McLaughlin, to talk about his book 'Along came a different'.
The children thoroughly enjoyed listening to Tom and learning more about his book and how differences unite people together; they particularly enjoying seeing all his fantastic illustrations and learning more about some of the other books he has written.
We thank Tom for visiting our school and sharing his love of writing and illustrating with us.
World Thinking Day 2023 - Wednesday 22nd February 2023
To celebrate World Thinking Day 2023, our children were asked to come to school in their respective uniform from Brownies, Guides, Rainbows, Scouts, Cubs and Squirrels.
It was wonderful to see them all in uniform to represent their different organisations and think about other people around the world.
International Mother Tongue Day 2023 - Tuesday 21st February 2023
To celebrate International Mother Tongue Day, the language ambassadors organised Preston Primary's first language fair.
Each ambassador designed their own stall of activities around their chosen language. The stalls featured work from: Ukraine, Portugal, China, Poland, Italy, France and British Sign Language activities.
Every class across the school attended the fair and spent time exploring the different activities.
Yr 1 and EYFS book sharing - Thursday 9th February 2023
As part of their art project, Year 1 have been busy making story books. The children choose to make a book of the story of 'Rupunzel' to allow them to plait and weave Rapunzel's hair.
To celebrate their hand work, Year 1 visited the children in EYFS and shared their amazing story books with them; the children were overjoyed by this reading treat!
EYFS Puppet Show Storytelling - Wednesday 8th February 2023
EYFS never miss an opportunity to share stories and find new ways to develop their love of reading.
Today, the children took it in turns to make their own puppet show and tell their own stories to an audience. What a wonderful way to demonstrate their passion for words stories in their own expressive way!
Wellbeing challenge: Learn something new! Mon 6th February - Fri 10th February 2023
Children throughout the school were set a wellbeing challenge to learn something new. We have been astounded by the diverse range of new skills they have challenged themselves to learn.
We have been thrilled to see the range of photos, demonstrations and finished products for their new skills in school. Skills have included: washing dishes and clothes, feeding and cleaning pets, repairing doors, learning a new ballet move, learning to ride a bike and even the tricky skill of felting animals!
Well done to everyone who has taken part so far and we look forward to hearing about other new skill accomplishments after half term!
EYFS Chinese New Year dragon dance - Friday 3rd February 2023
Our brilliant EYFS children celebrated the Chinese New Year in style with a dragon dance parade around the school. The dance was the culmination to their topic on the Chinese New Year as part of their work on food and celebrations.
The children brought the fun and festivities to all areas of the school with their dragon dance and instruments to welcome in the start of the Chinese New Year; the year of the rabbit.
The event was a certainly memorable one for all involved!
Year 1 community art project with Hobbycraft - Friday 3rd February
Our wonderful Year 1s are taking part in a local community outreach programme with Hobbycraft, Yeovil.
The children have been asked to create an image of of a local place of interest and have chosen Montacute house; this links to their upcoming history topic on Homes and Houses.
The children have been busy drawing sketches in their art books ahead of creating a giant canvas for display in store.
We thank Hobbycraft for their kind donation of materials and the opportunity to create a piece of art for their store.
School Council Assembly - Monday 16th January 2023
Members of our School Council led an assembly today to discuss their role as pupil voice for our school community.
The children did a fabulous job at presenting what Preston has to offer children and discussed ways they could make our school even better.
We look forward to seeing some of these suggestions and ideas come to fruition in the weeks and months ahead.
EYFS outdoor learning - Friday 13th January 2023
Our lovely, youngest learners made the most of a break in the rain to enjoy some winter sunshine. Rain or shine, our Reception children always enjoys being outdoors to learn in new and exciting ways.
This week, the children have enjoyed exploring the use of the mud kitchen, playing on the apparatus as part of their physical development objectives and subitising to 5 using concrete aids like Stickle bricks in the tuff tray.
World Religion Day - Friday 13th January 2023
The whole school celebrated World Religion Day. Children were encouraged to bring in artefacts and symbols of their faith to share and discuss with the children in their class. We were thrilled to see so many faiths represented and discussed; we thoroughly enjoyed listening to the children discussing why the item was so important to them and their family.
Tuesday 10th January 2023 - Computing in Year 2
Our wonderful Year 2s made excellent use of our new laptops to start their new unit in computing. The demonstrated excellent independent computing skills to produce work for their multi-media unit.
Spring Term Cookery Club - Tuesday 10th January
Our new batch of KS1 cooks entered the kitchen on Tuesday with Mrs Mann for Spring term Cookery Club. They began with demonstrating their cutting and peeling skills by making fabulously vibrant fruit kebabs; they particularly enjoyed the tasting part!
Year 5 Geography, Greece - Monday 9th January
Our Year 5s started their new geography topic with a comparison study between Yeovil and Greece. They began by locating Greece on maps and recognising it is part of Europe. They will continue to look at similarities and differences between their physical and human geography.
Eco Club bird boxes with Mr Pritchard - Thursday 12th December 2022
Our fabulous Eco team had a visit from Mr Pritchard and his father to assist them in putting up the wonderful bird boxes they kindly made for our school.
All the boxes have been carefully numbered and located in specific areas of our school grounds for the children to observe and monitor the local wildlife; we can't wait to see what types of bird are attracted to our school environment.
Icy outdoor play in EYFS - WB 12th December 2022
Our wonderful Reception children made the most of the icy conditions as part of their outdoor provision. They had lots of fun exploring the ice in both the tuff tray and the mud kitchen. Alongside this, the children went on a Christmas phonics hunt to find the missing phonics sound using picture clues.

Premier Sports - Martial Arts Workshop - Thursday 1st December 2022
The children in KS1 and LKS2 took part in a wonderful martial arts workshop. Mrs Girden led the children through a series of Taekwondo moves which taught them the basic rules and technique of this thrilling sport. It was a wonderful experience and the children are very much looking forward to future workshops to learn more.

Year 1 visit to Brimsmore Garden Centre - Monday 28th and Wednesday 30th November 2022
Our wonderful Year 1s walked to the local garden centre, Brimsmore, to experience some Christmas magic. The children were amazed by the displays and lights and enjoyed a warming hot chocolate and biscuit before receiving a visit from Father Christmas who left them all with a very special gift.
We thank Brimsmore Garden Centre for their hospitality and effort; it has started the festive season off spectacularly for some of our youngest learners in the school. The children plan to write back to Brimsmore to thank them.
Year 5 Victorian workshop day - Wednesday 30th November 2022
Year 5 stepped back in time to experience life in a bygone era. The children had a fabulous day taking part in Victorian past times such as: arts and crafts, parlour games and outdoor playground games. They even learnt the art of discipline in a Victorian classroom including standing up when a visitor entered the classroom!
The wonderful costumes and afternoon tea of sandwiches and scones added to their experience. Thank you to all the adults for organsing such a wonderful experience day.
STEM, Yr 6 Cool Aeronautics - Wednesday 30th November 2022
Year 6 took part in an engaging STEM workshop with Leonardo Helicopters. The workshop entitled 'Cool Aeronautics' encouraged the children to use an array of scientific and mathematical problem solving skills.
The fully interactive session required excellent team work and clear communication to achieve a winning bridge design; the children thoroughly enjoyed the challenge.

Year 6 First Aid with The Red Cross - Friday 25th November 2022
Our Year 6s took part in a first aid workshop with The Red Cross to learn basic first aid skills. The children thoroughly enjoyed learning these vital skills which prepare them for life.
Reception Family Learning - 21st November 2022
This term, the Reception focus for Family Learning is 'phonics'. The children have shared a range of different activities with their adults to develop their knowledge and understanding of this key area of learning.
The children really enjoyed spending time with their parent in school and sharing what they do on a daily basis in a fun and enjoyable way.

UK Parliament Week - Year 5, 14th November - 18th November 2022
Our Year 5s took part in UK Parliament week and learnt about the process of democracy, the voting process and how elections work. They undertook a formal democratic vote and were visited by local MP, Marcus Fysh, who explained more about the Houses of Parliament and how the government system in London works.
The children asked lots of very interesting questions and felt better informed about the system of democracy by the end of the week. We thank the teachers and Marcus Fysh for aiding the children's understanding of the process.
School Council Bake Sale for Children In Need - Friday 18th November 2022
With the support of Miss Feltham, our School Council organised a bake sale in aid of CIN 2022. All children had the opportunity to buy a scrumptious CIN themed cake to raise money for this fantastic cause.
We thank Miss Feltham, her Mum and all of the School Council for their baking efforts in this superb school event which brought extra colour and joy to the day.
Instruction writing baking for CIN, Year 1 - Thursday 17th November 2022
Our lovely Year 1 children took their instruction writing into the kitchen this week by baking Pusdey themed bsicuits for Children In Need.
They followed their set of instructions perfectly to create their own Pudsey cookie before decorating them to take home on Friday; we hope the children enjoyed them as much as the staff enjoyed seeing their smiles from this lovely activity.
Year 6 visit to Perrott Hill School for 'Mock trial' - Tuesday 15th November 2022
Selected Year 6 pupils represented Preston in the annual 'mock trial' event at Perrott Hill School. The event is held annually to develop children's public speaking skills and work together as a team to put their argument and justifications across in a mock court of law.
Our children spoke eloquently and put their arguments across strongly to finish in second place overall; we are extremely proud of their efforts.
Year 4 visit to Glastonbury Abbey - Tuesday 15th November 2022
Keen to learn more, our wonderful Year 4s made a visit to Glastonbury Abbey to immerse themselves in Tudor life as part of their history topic.
Following the success of last week's Tudor day in school, the children thoroughly enjoyed their further experience into the wonderful world of the Tudors; they are looking forward to demonstrating their understanding back in the classroom.
Remembrance Day - 11th November 2022
Our whole school community came together at 11 O'Clock to hold a two minute silence and mark the sacrifices of all soldiers who have fought in world wide conflicts. Members of our Invincibles Military Club read prayers and poems to offer time to reflect and give thanks.
We would like to thank our whole school community for their colourful poppy art work and outdoor displays which have adorned our school environment over recent days.
Sensory Garden update - 11th November 2022
Over recent weeks, Mrs Charter and Ms Davies have been working incredibly hard in our sensory garden. They have installed a number of new items including: a sphere water feature, freestanding metal wind chime and handmade signage.
The children are enjoying spending time in their revitalised sensory garden; they are appreciating the calm environment which promotes good mental health and wellbeing.
Year 4 Tudor day - Thursday 10th November 2022
Year 4 held a Tudor theme day which took them all back to 1509. They engaged in a whole day of activities including: making clay Tudor roses, a Tudor banquet including pottage, archery, Tudor dance and songs all whilst in full Tudor costume. The children gained so much from the day and are looking forward to their trip to Glastonbury Abbey next week.

Year 2 visit to Bovington Tank Museum - Tuesday 8th & Thursday 9th November 2022
Our Year 2s visited the Bovington Tank Museum as part of this term's history topic. The children thoroughly enjoyed dressing up in military costumes and looking at all the different tanks and unusual military vehicles on display; they were very curious and asked lots of question to learn more about military history.
School Council meet the Headteacher - Wednesday 9th November 2022
Our School Council met the Headteacher, Mrs Hodgson, to discuss their thoughts and views about their school community.
The children articulated their thoughts with confidence and provided factual evidence for change; we look forward to seeing some of these ideas coming to fruition in the weeks to come.
Year 3 'Fairytales' STEM engineering workshop - Tuesday 8th November 2022
Our Year 3s took part in a STEM engineering workshop in conjunction with local helicopter company, Leonardo Helicopters. The children were tasked with creating a 3D structure based around the themed of 'fairytales'.
The challenge taxed their scientific problem solving skills to create a structure that met the design brief; the children were very proud of their achievements.
We thank Leonardo Helicopters for their support and commitment to the STEM programme.
Year 6 visit to Nothe Fort - Friday 4th & Tuesday 8th November 2022
Our Year 6s stepped back in time to WW11 with a trip to Nothe Fort. As part of their history topic on WW11, the children were immersed in war time memorabilia and experienced life as an evacuee with a realistic school, shop and air raid shelter; they thoroughly enjoyed their day.
Year 1 Family Learning - Monday 7th November
Year 1 had the opportunity to invite a member of their family into school to take part in Family Learning.
We were fortunate enough to be supported by South West artist, Darrell Wakelam, who worked with the children and their families to create a fantastic 3D animal mask during this special workshop.
We thank Darrell for his effort with helping our families to create such a fabulous piece of work.
Year 6 Sports Science - Monday 7th November 2022
This week, Year 6 started a 6 week block of enrichment with a local PT and nutritionist, Rachel Suffield. Her sessions will cover a range of objectives linked to the Year 6 science curriculum.
This week, the children learnt about 'treats' and energy expenditure before completing a 15 minute HiiT workout; they are looking forward to their future sessions between now and Christmas.
Rev. David Keen Assembly - Monday 7th November 2022
Our school Vicar, Rev. David, visited the school to deliver an assembly on the Parable of The Good Samaritan .The children thoroughly enjoyed the interaction session with David and even learnt how to make a stretcher out of a coat and two poles!
We look forward to David's next visit in a few weeks time.
Yeovil Twinning Association visit - Friday 4th November 2022
The Yeovil Twinning Association visited our school with delegates from Yeovil's twin town, Herblay-sur-Seine in France.
The visitors were treated to French conversations, pieces of writing and songs from Year 5 before sitting down to tea and cakes with representatives from Year 6. The children had the opportunity to ask the visitors about life in Herblay-sur-Seine and how their schools and cultures differed from their own.
We look forward to the continued links with Herblay-sur-Seine and renewing relationships over the months and years to come.
Year 6 poppy selling for Remembrance day - Friday 4th November 2022
Year 6 are currently studying WWII in their history lessons. As part of their work on Remembrance Day, they have been selling poppies in the mornings to raise money for The Royal British Legion.
The school will be celebrating Remembrance Day on Friday 11th November where we we will give thanks to our military personal, past and present, for their sacrifices.
Malcolm the Magician visit Friday 21st October 2022
Our lovely new Reception children were treated to a special visit from Malcolm the Magician to end of the start of their first half term at Preston.
It was heartwarming to watch the joy and wonder on the children's faces during his show and we thank the staff for organising this lovely event.
Thursday 13th October 2022 - Year 5 trip to Ashford Water Works
Our Year 5s took at a trip to Ashford Water Works as part of their topic on the water cycle. They undertook a series of water surveys and toured the water works before spending time in and around the water reservoir. An enjoyable and informative day was had by all.
Wednesday 12th October 2022 - Year 2 Cookery Club
Our Year 2s have been busy creating delicious healthy food as part of their cookery club. This week, they made guacamole with wholemeal pitta bread; the children were surprised by how much they enjoyed it and are looking forward to re-creating more at home.
Monday 10th October 2022 - Premier Education
Children across the school were lucky enough to take part in a series of sports workshops with Premier Education. The children were fortunate enough to try their hand at some brand new sports including: Street Surfing and fencing. It was wonderful to see them enjoying themselves and applying their skills to new sporting disciplines.
Year 6 - Christian Values Assembly - Friday 7th October 2022
Children in Year 6 led their Collective Worship Assembly this week by discussing the core Christian Values that thread through our school. The assembly touched on themes such as 'respect' and the importance of this in our every day life.
KS2 Science club - Explosion fun! Wednesday 5th October 2022
KS2 took their science skills outside of the classroom this week by creating explosions and eruptions with Mrs Chambers our Science Lead.
Year 2 Cooking Club - Tuesday 4th October 2022
Our Year 2s created another healthy treat this week in their after school club, chocolate avocado mousse. The children were amazed by the ingredients that went into creating this delicious treat and certainly enjoyed tasting their finished product. Well done Year 2!
Harvest Assembly - Monday 3rd October 2022
We celebrated Harvest with a fun and interactive assembly with the Rev. David Keene. Children across all year groups wrote and read poems and prayers thanking God for his gifts of food followed by a parable relating to Harvest brought to life by David.
We would like to thank our parents for the overwhelming number of donated items of produce for the Lord's Larder food bank; these items will greatly help local residents in need.
Arts Week - Monday 26th - Friday 30th September 2022
Our school celebrated Arts Week this week with the aid of Yeovil Arts Space and their team of artists. There was a buzz of creativity around the school and children got to experience different forms of art and mediums to showcase their skills.

Girls football tournament, Westfield Academy - Thursday 29th September 2022
Our Year 5/6 girls took part in a girls football tournament at Westfield Academy. The team played exceptionally well with a mixture of draws and wins.

KS1 & KS2 More Able Science Workshop -Thursday 29th September 2022
Our more able scientists in KS1 and KS2 took part in an interactive CSI Crime Investigations with 'Fun Science'.
The children immersed themselves in the world of CSI to look for clues to solve the mystery. It was a wonderful opportunity for our scientists to showcase their talents and put them to use in a different way to their classroom learning.

Yeovil Schools Cross Country - Wednesday 28th September 2022
The first event of the Yeovil schools cross country season got off to a flying start at Yeovil Rugby Club. We are proud of all the children who took part and made the course distance; however, a special mention goes to five of our children who placed 4th, 5th and 6th in their age categories.

Symmetry in Year 3 - Wednesday 28th September 2022
Our Year 3s put their symmetry skills to good use this week by creating symmetrical Roman shield patterns.
European Day of Languages - Monday 26th September 2022
Our children had a wonderful celebrating the European Day of Languages. Across the school, each class enjoyed participating in a range of different activities including letter writing to European Pen Pals and creating posters to welcome people.
Our Language Ambassadors visited classes in Reception, Year 1, Year 2, Year 3 and Year 4 to share bilingual books as well teaching the children in the class to say 'hello' in a variety of different languages.
Arts Week Launch with Natasha Rand, Education Director of Yeovil Art Space - Friday 23rd September 2022
Today the school welcomed Natasha Rand, Education Director of Yeovil Art Space to launch our Arts Week. Natasha introduced the children to two local artists who will be working with classes next week; the children are very excited at the prospect of showcasing their creative skills.
Animals 2 U - Friday 23rd September
A number of year groups had a special visit from Animals 2 U today to learn all about different creatures and their special features, The children enjoyed the hands on experience and got to hold a number of different animals from geckos to snakes.
Colour mixing and understanding colour palettes in Year 2 - Thursday 22nd September 2022
Our Year 2s have been learning about primary colours and the art of colour mixing this week to develop their painting skills. They put their skills to good use to mix autumn colours to paint leaves.
Invincibles Club first meet of '22/23 - Friday 16th September 2022
Our Invincibles Military Club met for the first time this academic year with Mrs Rich and Mrs Evans. This week, they explored what it is like to be a military child and what it feels like for them. The club will meet on the 3rd Friday of every month and share their experiences whilst having fun with children in the same situation as themselves.
Pond Improvement with Yeovil Rivers Community Trust - Thursday 15th September
Our eco-warriors were lucky enough to have a visit from Yeovil Rivers Community Trust to help improve our pond area.
We planted a selection of native aquatic plants such as Marsh Marigold, Yellow Flag Iris and Water Plantain as they are excellent pollen sources and should also help release oxygen back into the pond. The children also used large pieces of ham stone to build ramps in the corner of the pond to provide safer access for wildlife. In the corner of our pond area, we constructed a hibernaculum from stone and branches that will help create a safe shelter for insects, reptiles and amphibians visiting the pond.
Finally, we were lucky enough to be donated a bat box that will be placed on a nearby tree, and a bird table in order to provide energy for the birds especially during the winter months.
We are looking forward to welcoming the Yeovil Rivers Community Trust back in the Spring where we will be able to show them the progress and continue to plant some more pollinator friendly plants around the school pond. This will encourage a wider range of insects to visit the pond area. A selection of pots will be arranged around the pond and planted with native pollinator friendly plants, including ox-eye daisy, foxgloves, borage and teasle.
Cookery Club Wednesday 14/9/22
This week, KS1 Cookery Club have been learning basic knife skills to make some very tasty fruit kebabs. The children took great care to cut their pieces of fruit accurately and enjoyed eating them at the end of their session.
Year 2 Mindfulness with Paula Hall - Tuesday 13th September 2022
Cedar Class enjoyed their second session of Mindfulness with our visiting specialist teacher, Paula Hall. The children thoroughly enjoyed their session and their focus and technique proved highly impressive.
The class will continue with their 45 minute sessions until half term before switching with Maple Class; these sessions are in addition to their P.E lessons.
Year 1 Bear Hunt - Monday 12th September 2022
Our Year 1s took their learning outside of the classroom this week and went on their very own bear hunt to support their writing in English. The children explored our Sensory Garden looking for clues; they were overjoyed to finally find a giant teddy bear at the end of the trail.
Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II - 9.9.22
Today, we marked the sad news of the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II with a special whole school assembly. We offered prayers and held a two minute silence to reflect on our memories of the Queen and the work she did.
Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and the community during this difficult time.
