Year 6 Play

This morning, we went to watch the Year 6 play - The Wizard of Oz. It was absolutely fantastic and we really enjoyed it! All of the children were very brave. After, we spent time writing them thank you letters. We told them about our favourite parts, characters, props and costumes.

DT - Constructing a castle

Today, we looked back at our design specifications before carefully building our castles. We carefully coloured it so it was suitable for the person we were building for. Then, We used nets to build the 3D shapes. We had to make sure the structure was strong and stable so we securely attached our structures to a base.

Year 4’s Egyptian Project Day

Today, Year 4 invited us all to go and see their projects. We really enjoyed having a look at their work and even found out some interesting facts. It was clear they had been working really hard! Thank you to year 4 and we are looking forward to sharing our projects with you soon!

Science

This week, our Science focus has been revising our forces and magnets topic. We have sorted statements into true and false to remind us of the interesting fa to we have learnt. Today, we made predictions and carried out investigations to test the hypothesis. After that, we drew and labelled diagrams to demonstrate which poles attract and repel each other.

Healthy Eating Week

This week is healthy eating week. We learnt about the importance of having 5 portions of fruits and vegetables each day. After having lots of discussion, we tasted some delicious fruits and vegetables.

Today, we learnt about the importance of protecting our oceans. We discussed methods of how we can look after our oceans and then created informative posters.

Now that our paper is finally dry, we spent this afternoon painting our designs onto the scroll. We used colours which were featured in the original Anglo-Saxon art we looked at.

This term, in DT, our focus has been cooking and nutrition. We have learnt so much about the importance of healthy eating, eating seasonal foods produced in the UK, how to follow a recipe safely and food hygiene. To complete the topic, we designed and made a healthy tart using seasonal ingredients produced in the UK.

Art

Our art topic this term is Anglo-Saxon scrolls. Over the past couple weeks, we have been busy designing our scrolls based off of art we’ve studied from Anglo-Saxon times. This afternoon, we made our own paper adapted from an ancient technique. Using parcel paper, water and PVA glue, we created paper by overlapping strips soaked in glue and water.

King’s coronation celebrations!

Today, we celebrated the King’s coronation. We started the day with an assembly where we sang the coronation song, shared poems and said prayers. After that, we had fun doing word searches, coronation colouring and learning some interesting facts about our new King. A huge well done and thank you to Year 1, 4 and 5 for their fantastic and entertaining performances this afternoon. We were also lucky enough to have an ice cream which was kindly bought by the PTA. Finally, to end a brilliant day, we paraded around wearing our crowns and carrying our orbs.

Eating seasonally was our focus for DT this week. We looked at charts to find which fruits are currently growing this season. We then made and ate a delicious fruit crumble!

Crown making

In preparation for the coronation next week, we have been busy making crowns. As a school, we are learning about different countries in the commonwealth games. The country year 3 are focussing on is Australia. We decided to use colour from their flag when making our crowns.

Class Assembly

This week, it was our turn to lead the class assembly. The Christian value we were focusing on was friendship. During the assembly, we told a story from the bible which discusses the importance of having good friends. We finished by reading a poem and sharing a prayer about friendship.

DT - fruit skewers

We have been learning about food and nutrition in DT. Today, we discussed climate and we learnt about where different fruits and vegetables are commonly grown. 
we made fruit skewers using fruits that have grown in different places in the world. They were delicious!

We finished our art topic by creating our abstract sculptures using recycled materials. We worked in small groups to create a sculpture that resembles playground equipment. We used techniques such as gluing, folding, taping, slotting and tying to hold the materials together.

Crazy Scientist Day

To end our science fortnight, we have spent a whole day focussing on science. We did so many experiments today and even watched some online too! We made lava lamps using food colouring, oil, water and antacid tablets. Next, we put skittles in hot water and watched the colours run. We discussed why that happens and what ‘dissolve’ means. Decorating coffee filters then placing them in water and watching the colours merge together was fun! There were many more too! We finished the day by creating a poster about our favourite experiment.

DT - Pneumatic Toys

In DT, we have been designing pneumatic toys. We have been thinking carefully about the design criteria, creating sketches and today we finally got to make them! To begin with, we painted our boxes. Next, we added arms, eyes and hair. To finish, we pulled a tube through a small hole in the back and attached it to a balloon inside.

Science - BBC Live Lesson

To begin our science week, we had a BBC Live lesson about Forces. We made predictions about experiments, read results and data and designed our own spaceship whilst thinking about air resistance.

As part of our Light topic, we have been learning about the sun. The sun is essential for life on earth, it provides us with heat, light and energy. However, it is important that we are safe when in the sun. We created leaflets explaining how we can protect ourselves.

World Book Day

To celebrate World Book Day, we have been designing our own ebooks that we will create on the iPads in computing time tomorrow. In English, we wrote a character description and explained why we chose to dress up as that person. We have also visited the book fair today and got the opportunity to look and some new books! After the book fair, the BBC were hosting a live lesson. We joined in with some activities, including designing our own book character.

Author visit - Tom McLaughlin

Tom McLaughin is an author and illustrator. Tom came to visit us at school today to share some of his books with us. Tom read ‘Along came a Different’ and we really enjoyed it. After the story, we were lucky enough to see how he does some of his drawings for his books.

This week, we have been learning about earcons. Earcons are short, catchy sounds. These can be used in computing too. We also looked at emoticons. Then, we sang a song and had to show our emotions while singing - It was lots of fun!

Today, we looked at an information text that discussed whether or not children should have to wear school uniform. We spent some time highlighting the key features. We found an introduction, a paragraph for and against, a conclusion, fronted adverbial and subordinating conjunctions.

This week, we are looking at balanced arguments. We had a debate in class today to decide if Robin Hood is truly a hero or just a thief. The children on the left of the photo were voting hero and the children on the right voted thief!

Science experiment

Today, we conducted a science experiment to observe how water travels through the stem of a flower. We measured the water to make sure it was a fair test. Then, we added a different colour of food colouring to each measuring tube.

Today, we made christingles. We learnt that christingle means ‘Christ’s light’. The orange represents the world, the four cocktail sticks represent the four seasons and the red ribbon symbolises Jesus’ blood.

We linked RE with Art this week. We thought about the bible story of Jesus being baptised by John in the River Jordan. We looked at paintings that portray the story and the important parts of it: a dove, the water and the voice of God. We then created our own oil pastel pictures to show the story.
