Children will discuss the different festivals & celebrations held around the world and look at the similarities & differences these celebrations have. Many young children may not have heard of any of these festivals before, so class discussions will be vital to aid their understanding. It will be important that the countries these festivals take place in are also looked at, linking to geography. Children may have the opportunity to hold their own class festival, dressing up in costume and making masks. Festivals that will be shared as a whole school: Chinese New Year – Reception will make a Chinese dragon head and parade through the school playing musical instruments they have made and dancing. Mardi Gras will be celebrated and as in previous years, shared with our local residential home. Mardi Gras activities will be shared with our link school in France. Remembrance Day will be a highlight in our school calendar, where the children will use art and DT to design displays that commemorate the lives of the fallen, this year particularly from the local community. Festivals and celebrations from the Christian calendar will be discussed and shared with our link schools making them aware of how Christians celebrate these important times. Diwali will also be a focus this year with the children being made aware of the traditions associated with this festival, children will make a candle holder for the festival of light and design chalk Rangoli patterns on the playground.
