Geography Day

Today, we celebrated Geography Day. Year 3 were focussing on Guatemala. We all came into school wearing blue and white, we spent time researching interesting facts, locating the country in atlases and making Guatemala biscuits.

Library Assembly

Today, we learnt about the Summer Reading Challenge. The theme this year is Marvellous Makers and the challenge is to read 6 books in 6 weeks over the summer holidays!

Art - Anglo-Saxons

English - Recount

Today, we wrote a recount of our trip to the Dorset Museum. We used some fantastic fronted adverbials, expanded noun phrases, ambitious vocabulary, paragraphs and a range of conjunctions. We wrote our recounts in chronological order so it would be easier for the reader to follow. Here are a few super examples:

Today, we began our new art topic. This term, we will be researching Anglo-Saxon patterns and art work. We looked some examples today before tried to create them ourselves.

Trip to Dorset Museum

Year 3 went on a fantastic trip to the Dorset Museum to consolidate our learning about Romans. We went digging for Roman artefacts, wore traditional Roman outfits and had a fascinating tour of the Roman Town House!

DT - Structures

This half term, we have been looking at structures. We have designed a castle with key features to fit our product specification. We then constructed a range of 3D shapes using nets to build the castles. Today, we completed our final product. Please see photos below!

Computing - Internet safety

For our first Computing lesson this term, we discussed online safety. We reminded ourselves of the rules of staying safe online and why it is important. Then, we used Scratch to create little animations. We programmed our sprites to say internet safety tips.

English - Balanced Arguments

This week we are going to be looking at balanced arguments. We began today by reading a text about whether or not pupils should wear school uniforms. After reading the text, we spent some time identifying the key features.

Science

Today, we conducted an experiment to investigate how water is transported within plants. First, we cut the stems of the flowers to make sure they were all the same length and we measured out the water to ensure it was a fair test. We poured an equal amount of food colouring into each cup of water so that we are able to observe the water moving through the plant.

Computing - Frame by Frame

In the previous lesson, we created our own flip book–style animations. In this lesson, we developed this knowledge, and applied it to make a stop-frame animation using a tablet.

Art - Creating texture

Our art topic this term is Prehistoric painting. For our final piece, we are going to be doing cave style paintings on a textured background that we will design to look like a cave wall. To create the textured background, we glued lentils, bulgar wheat, couscous and sand to some strong cardboard. After that, we painted over the top using the natural paints we mixed earlier.

Art - Prehistoric Palette

Today, we made our own paint using natural resources. To make the base of the paint, we used flour and water. Then, we added herbs, spices, coffee and charcoal to create different colours.

Computing - Can a picture move?

This lesson, we discussed whether or not a picture can move. We learnt about simple animation techniques and created our own animations in the style of flipbooks using sticky notes.

This week, in geography, we looked at land use. We researched photos of Yeovil from the past and compared them to images of Yeovil today. We discovered that the cinema used to be a railway and The Entertainer used to be a hotel!

Art

Today, we used charcoal to create our art work. We crumbled the charcoal into a dust. Using a paper towel, we spread this dust over our paper to create a textured look for the background. After that, using sticks of charcoal, we drew animals similar to the ones we practiced last week.

Today, we created art work to portray the baptism of Jesus. We looked at some paintings and discussed the features they all shared. We made sure we represented these features in our own art work.

Today, we were learning about magnetic materials. We learnt that all magnetic materials are made from a metal but we found that not all metals are magnetic. We used magnets to test different objects around the classroom.

RE - Baptism

Today, we visited St James’ Church and Reverend Keen taught us about what happens during a baptism ceremony. We learnt that the holy water is poured onto people’s heads as a symbol of them being cleansed and about the role of Grandparents. Reverend Keen showed us the special robes he has to wear during the ceremony. After that, we acted our a baptism ceremony.

Today, we learnt about how texture can be created and used to make art. We created different textures on paper by using a rubbing technique. Then, we tore the shape rubbings to create a final piece of art.

Today, we celebrated World Mental Health Day. We spent the day dressed in yellow, doing mindfulness yoga/meditation and discussing what makes us special!

Science - Muscles

In Science, we have been learning about animals and humans. Our subject for this week was muscles. We discovered that muscles are attached to bones with tendons and they are needed to help us move. We made models of our hands using strings and straws to demonstrate muscles and tendons.
