Courageous Advocacy
What is a courageous advocate?
A courageous advocate is someone who supports, champions and speaks up for a cause that is important and meaningful to them. Courage is needed to persevere and stand up for something or someone you believe in to make a difference in the world.
At Preston CofE Primary School we want to support and encourage our children to become courageous advocates through championing causes in their local community, nationally and globally.
At some point in life we will all face challenges and need support to help us overcome these barriers. We teach our children that is important to help others through our work on British Values, World Views and by links to the Bible and other important books from other faiths. Our children learn about other courageous advocates who make a difference to our world. We want our children to have confidence to discuss and debate big ideas, to challenge injustice and engage in activities that can bring about change on some level.
"Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy."
(Proverbs 31: 8-9)
What do our courage advocates do?
It is important for our children to appreciate their role as part of a community. We encourage them to take responsibility for themselves and foster an understanding of their importance, impact and influence they have in the world.
Our Eco Warriors are an example of how our children have opportunities to implement change and make a real difference to the world around them.
In recent years we have carried out fundraising to raise awareness of issues and support those working for change, including:
- local foodbank (Lord’s Larder)
- Sports relief
- Comic Relief
- Children in Need
- Samaritans Purse Operation Christmas Child Shoebox Appeal
- British Red Cross Ukraine Appeal
- Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal
- Children’s Hospice South West
- Hello Yellow
- Crazy Hair Day
- Race for Life Appeal
- Yeovil Opportunity Group
- Book Aid International (current School Council charity)
Links to the local community
We aim for our children to develop a grasp on the meaning of “belonging” through work with our local and global community and the sense of responsibility that comes with this. We need to show our connection with, and care for, the world in which we all live and care for the people who live in it:
- links with our local care homes and local charities
- support for charities of significance to our children and families i.e. Book Aid International
- School Council and Eco Warriors who seek views of our children and provide them with a voice for change
- PTA who lead community events such as Christmas and summer fairs, School Discos, Bingo, Mother’s Day Cake Competition for bake sale, Yard Sales and our hugely popular school uniform shop
- Rivers Trust community project to improve our school pond area
- Bird Box installation by members of our local community
- Arts Mark Award projects links to local community groups
- Affiliation with the “Yeovil Golden Oldies” community group
