Thursday 23rd June - KS1 'Fun Science' workshop
Our more able scientists had a special workshop on Thursday to showcase their talents and engage in different forms of scientific activities.
We invited the team at 'Fun Science' to work with the children and test their scientific brains. They had a terrific morning learning all about the difference between explosions and eruptions through a series of 'hands on' experiments and teaching. We look forward to welcoming them back next year to work with more of our future scientists.
Wednesday 22nd June - The Bear Trail - Year 5
Year 5 got to challenge their fears and experience the thrill on an assault course at The Bear Trail on Wednesday. The weather was sublime and the children thoroughly enjoyed getting wet and muddy on the variety of obstacles. They demonstrated superb resilience and perseverance throughout the day and did themselves proud! The whole experience has prepared them for what awaits them on their Year 6 residential next year. Well done Year 5!
Friday 10th June 2022 - Year 3 Carnival workshop
Our Year 3 children were treated to a colourful, energetic carnival workshop. They thoroughly enjoyed dressing up and feeling the carnival spirit!
Thursday 26th May - The Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations
The staff and children celebrated the Queen's Platinum Jubilee in style today with a range of fun events and activities.
The morning began with the whole school coming together to showcase their homemade crowns and sing the National Anthem followed by prayers; the glorious array of red, white and blue was a joy to see.
At lunchtime, the children were treated to a very special Jubilee picnic lunch and received gifts of flags from the Queen!
Throughout the day, the children participated in a variety of different activities relating to the the decade they have been learning about. Activities included: art and crafts, role play of the Queen's reign during the 2000s, tie-dye t-shirts and making Eton Mess and cakes to name but a few!
We thank the parents and all the adults in our school for all their hard work in making this such a memorable day.
Monday 23rd & Wednesday 25th May - Year 5 Play 'Gold'
Our Year 5s showcased their theatrical talents this week in their play, 'Gold'. Gold told the story of King Midus who turned everything to gold with his touch.
The creativity, songs and performances were simply stunning and we thank all the parents and grandparents who came in to watch the performance; the hard work and dedication of all the children and staff was clear to see. Well done to all involved.
Tuesday 24th May - Year 2 Circus skills workshop
Year 2 enjoyed a superb circus skills workshop and experienced a variety of activities including: plate spinning, the low wire and of course, juggling! The children thoroughly enjoyed learning the techniques needed and enjoyed spending time working with their family members.
Friday 20th May - Yr 2 Florence Nightingale Workshop
Year 2 were treated to an insightful workshop by The Somerset Heritage Service to learn more about Florence Nightingale as part of their history topic.
The children gathered lots of practical experience of Florence Nightingale's role as a nurse by learning how to bandage each other and use some of the equipment she would have had available to her. It was wonderful for the children to gain experience of her life and dress up in clothes similar to those she would have worn; it helped bring their learning to life!
Friday 20th May - Year 5 Tea Party
Thursday 19th May - Year 4 trip to London
Our 4s had the opportunity to visit the British Museum in London to experience the wonders of The Tutankhamun exhibition. The children had a wonderful day and thoroughly enjoyed seeing all the artefacts and exhibits during their visit.
Thursday 19th May - Jubilee Design a Dish Finals at Westfield Academy
Our Jubilee 'Design a Dish' finalists visited Westfield Academy to make their winning dishes for the Technology department: Mrs Prigg, Mr Reid and Mrs Mann. The standard was extremely high but the award of the 2022 Jubilee themed Masterchef Design a Dish went to Anastasia for her inspired beef dish. Many congratulations to her and a massive thank you to Westfield Academy for hosting such a fantastic event.
Sunday 15th May - Model aircraft
Libby from Hawthorn Class joined her dad and other model aircraft enthusiasts to see if they have set a new record for getting machines in the sky on Sunday 15th May at 12pm.
Hundreds of model aircraft fans across the country were set the challenge to mark the centenary of the British Model Flying Association (BMFA).
Observers will collate numbers from gatherings around the UK to see if they have beaten the previous World Record of 178.
May Mental Health Week: 9th May - 15th May
The theme for Mental Health Week has been loneliness. The children have been discussing how we can prevent loneliness and what we can do to help each other.
We talked about the impact that COVID has had on people of all ages, and in particular spoke about the residents at West Abbey Care Home.
Children from across the school have come up with letters and cards that we have sent to the residents to remind them that they are not alone!
Wednesday 11th May - New arrivals in EYFS
EYFS welcomed three new arrivals on Wednesday: Sonic, Flash and Preston. The children were ecstatic to meet their new year group pets and get to known them all individually.
The children have been busy learning about what guinea pigs need in terms of care, feeding and handling. Our newcomers have started to adjust to their new surroundings and are enjoying getting to know all their lovely new EYFS friends through lots of cuddles and petting.
Monday 9th May - Create a Jubilee dish competition winners
Over the past few weeks, our KS2 children have been designing and creating their own culinary master pieces to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee in June. There was an array of different dishes and lots of creativity which made the judges decision very difficult. After much deliberation, a winner for each class was finally chosen. Our winners now go through to the finals at Westfield Academy in June.
Friday 6th May - Milo the dog visits EYFS
EYFS had their first visit from Milo the dog today as part of their topic on 'pets'. Milo is owned by our Chair of PPAT Governors, Mr Kerrigan, and Miss Kerrigan from EYFS. The children learnt the golden rules on how to act around dogs and were very respectful and gentle with him.
Milo plans to visit the children every Friday to watch them all grow and learn; he is looking forward to more strokes and treats over the coming weeks as our first canine pupil!
A special thank you to Miss Kerrigan for organising this activity and for Mr Kerrigan for bringing Milo in to see us.
Friday 6th May - KS2 Intrahouse Cross Country
KS2 took part in a Intrahouse Cross Country event this afternoon. The children took advantage of the warm sunshine to compete against their year group peers and enjoy this annual sporting activity. Special thanks to Mr Watkinson for organising the event.
Friday 6th May - Yeovil Community Arts Writing Competition Winner's Presentation
Four of our children visited Yeovil Library today to meet the author and harpist, Hazel Prior.
The event celebrated the achievements of local primary children who won prizes in a recent short story competition. One of our children received an award for overall 2nd prize with a number of other children receiving a certficates of 'Special Commendation' for their literary efforts.
The event was the first of its kind organised by Siobhan Casson, on behalf of YCAA, and was supported by YTFC Youth Coaches. We thank YCAA for inviting us to this special event and look forward to working with them again in the future.
Year 5 Clay Workshop - Thursday 7th April
Our 5s were fortunate to take part in a clay workshop today with a visiting artist. The children carefully crafted their own clay monsters with lots of intricate details. They all thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to develop their artistic skills and learn new techniques as part of this enrichment activity.
Easter Service KS1 & KS2 - Thursday 7th April
Today, the children celebrated the story of Easter and gave thanks to God as part of their special Easter services. Children read the story of Easter with prayers and sang wonderfully during their assemblies. There were some fabulous readings in KS2 and our Year 2 Parents joined us to share in the joy of our KS1 assembly surrounded by a colourful array of Easter bonnets!
Our school Vicar, Rev. Ruth, gave a touching final sermon on how God loves everyone for who they are. We are so thankful for the work that Ruth has done with our school and wish her well as she moves onto new pastures; she has worked tirelessly for our children and they have enjoyed her services and compassion throughout her three years with us.
Year 4 Play - Wind in the Willows (Tuesday 5th April/Wednesday 6th April)
Our Year 4s performed to the whole school and parents this week with their production of 'Wind in the Willows'. The singing was outstanding and the staging and performances were simply fabulous. We are so proud of all the children and hope the audiences enjoyed the show.
Our Year 5s are already in rehearsals for their performance next half term.
Trifle making in Year 1 - Thursday 31st March
Our Year 1s had a wonderful morning making trifles as part of their work in Design Technology. The children had to carefully measure out their ingredients, prepare the fruit and take their time to ensure that every layer was set before beginning the next stage. The children had a wonderful time preparing and making their trifle but the best part was eating it!
Road Safety Workshops - Wednesday 30th March
(all year groups)
All our children received a workshop from Somerset Road Safety to make them aware about the potential dangers that roads can pose. The children all asked lots of relevant questions and demonstrated a good awareness of road safety.
Healthy Futures Workshop - WB 28th March
Years 2 and 5 are lucky enough to have a 6 week "Healthy Futures" workshop delivered to them. This teaches the children how to keep themselves both mentally and physically healthy, including how to look after their teeth properly!
Animals 2 U visit - WB 28.3.22
Our wonderful PTA paid for every child in KS2 to participate in an Animals 2 U workshop this week. The children had an amazing experience and were able to get up close to a variety of different animals including geckos and snakes. The children were brave in overcoming their fears and learnt a lot of interesting facts about the animals. We thank our PTA for the magical experience.

Year 3 and 4 R.E workshop - Wednesday 23rd March
Our Year 3s and 4s participated in an fantastic R.E faiths workshop. They learnt lots of interesting facts about different religions such as Islam and what is important to Muslims as part of their faith.
Year 2 Virtual Author Visit from Lucy Brandt - Friday 18th March
Year 2 met the author Lucy Brandt to learn more about her new book, Leonora Bolt. They learnt more about the character and her secret inventions. The children took the opportunity to ask the author some questions to give them inspiration for future stories.
Comic Relief - Friday 18th March
The whole school celebrated Comic Relief by wearing non-uniform with super hero capes! There were lots of fun activities laid on for the children including themed treasure hunts and arts and crafts. Children donated a £1 in return for their non-uniform and the school raised a grand total of £265.37. Thank you to everyone for your donations and effort.
Science Week - WB 14th March
Our school held a Science week this week to focus on fun, practical enrichment activities to inspire our future and current scientists. Classes completed a range of different types of activities to spark curiosity and interest from the children.

YTFC Primary Stars in Year 3 - P.E (Jan - March)
YTFC have been working with the children and teachers in Year 3 to develop their P.E skills with lots of engaging activities to promote sport in schools.
The Taunton Festival of Arts Young Musician Competition
Seri-Ann from Sycamore Class competed against her peers by playing the pianoforte at the recent Taunton Festival of Arts Young Musician Competition. Seri-Ann was one of only three competitors from a state school and also one of the youngest! Seri-Ann was awarded a Highly Commended award for her performance - well done Seri-Ann!
YTFC Community Trust donation for World Book Day - Feb '22
YTFC Community Trust visited our school on World Book Day to present the children with a generous donation of 50 books and x5 £5 WH Smith vouchers from the Literacy Trust; we are so grateful for this kind gift.

School Council's visit to the Yeovil Mayor's Chambers - Feb '22
Our School Council visited the Mayor's Chambers to learn about the Mayor's role and understand the process of democracy within the town.
The children had a lovely time and really enjoyed viewing all the Mayor's artefacts and learning about the history of the Yeovil Mayor.
Eco Club Bird Boxes - January 2022
Mr Pritchard (Yeovil Conservation Group) and his Father-In Law kindly donated a selection of home made bird boxes to the school to encourage birds to nest in the school grounds.
Children from Eco-Club joined Mr Pritchard to learn about the best locations for the bird boxes and what to look out for. The children are looking forward to seeing what types of birds will nest in the boxes and monitor their visits over the weeks to come.
Year 2 Tea Party
Selected children from Year 2 met with Mrs Hodgson on Friday for a Tea Party to celebrate their achievements in class. As always, there was a plentiful supply of treats and a chance to tell Mrs Hodgson about the work they have been doing over a cup of tea and cake. Congratulations to all the children involved.
Candy canes for everyone!
We are so lucky to have such thoughtful children at our school! On the last day of term, Dylan (Y6) treated every single child in the school to a candy cane each! Our very own Santa! A big thanks to Dylan for his kindness and generosity.
Whole School Pantomime Trip - December '21
Our children were extremely fortunate to be given to the opportunity to visit The Octagon Theatre to watch the 2021 pantomime, Mother Goose.
Thanks to the generosity of our wonderful PTA, every child was given a ticket and transport to experience the wonders of live theatre. We are so lucky and thankful for the opportunity; It was such an enjoyable morning.
Eco/Gardening Club
Our children have been busy on our school allotment. During Eco Club, the children discussed what plants would be best suited to the time of year and the space available.
Over the past few weeks, the children have spent time preparing their own individual allotment planter and making sure it was ready for planting. Next, the children planted a range of items including: radishes, winter carrots and daffodil bulbs ready for Spring.
Well done children on your continued hard work in caring for our school environment and eco-systems. We look forward to seeing the results of your hard work in the weeks to come.
Remembrance Day 2021 at Preston
To commemorate the centenary of The Royal British Legion, we came together and paid our respect to soldiers past and present on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day and month.
We paid tribute by creating some memorial wooden plaques, clay poppies and created a tribute garden which included the names of local soldiers lost in conflicts. We thank God for our freedom today and for the sacrifices these soldiers made for our futures.
Lord, strengthen our hearts, hands, and minds, to work together for peace;
to see you in one another,
and to seek your kingdom above all things; that your will may be done, and your Kingdom come,
through Jesus Christ, the Lord of lords and King of kings.
Amen.
EYFS and KS1 Remember
We gathered outside to remember everyone who has fought and died in conflicts around the world. We listened to The Last Post and were silent for two minutes. Mrs Charter then read In Flander’s Field to us.
Whole school art project
As a school we celebrate each child as an individual. Miss Roy (Art Subject Lead) helped us to capture this in a wonderful whole school art project.
Each child had the opportunity to put their own hand/finger print on the canvas as a permanent memento for the school. The finished canvas is now hanging in our main corridor for all to see. Thank you Miss Roy!
Rail Safety 2021
Marcia, from Network Rail, came to visit us today to teach us about how we can keep ourselves safe at train stations and level crossings. We learnt that a train can travel at up to 125mph and takes the length of 20 football pitches to stop. She taught us the rules about using level crossings and why we should keep behind the yellow lines at the stations.
#HelloYellow - Mental Health Awareness Day - 8th October
A sea of yellow flooded the gates this morning! Aiming to raise awareness for the importance of looking after pupils' mental health, we decided to raise money for the charity YoungMinds with a #HellowYellow event.
Thanks to all of your support and generosity, we managed to raise a FANTASTIC £373.82.
Harvest Festival - October '21
Today Rev. Ruth came to visit us to lead our Harvest Festival. We sang some harvest songs, listened to Ruth talk about the world and some children read prayers that they had written. Thank you to everyone for your very kind donations to The Lord’s Larder.
European Day of Languages - 26th September '21
Our children celebrated the 20th European Day of Languages on the 26th September to promote the learning of different languages and celebrate our cultural differences.
A variety of activities were undertaken across the school including: creating a video clip in a foreign language, learning how to speak in new languages and learning songs in new languages. Our Preston Language Ambassadors were instrumental in making the day a terrific success for all involved!
Schools Cross Country success - September '21
Our pupils had the opportunity to run in the first meet in the Cross Country calendar this year. Preston Primary had a fantastic turn out at Yeovil Rugby Club with 5 of our runners doing particularly well in their categories.
As a school, we won the overall Year 5/6 Boys category. Well done to all the children who participated!
